The Blessed One himself, together with the retinue of gods such as Indra and Brahma, also taught the Dharma there during the middle watch of the night and then returned. In the last watch of the night, five-colored clouds gathered, and that monastery, like being filled with washing water, was filled with water and collapsed. The group of six monks heard this and fled in fear. That Brahmin also prepared clean and abundant food the next day, filled a cart with it and came, and seeing his monastery collapsed, he fell to the ground in arrogance. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda, speaking to the Brahmin: The monasteries that gods and many people have built for the Tathagata, the Tathagata has not fully enjoyed, but your monastery, last night in the first watch, the elder monks fully enjoyed, and in the middle watch of the night, the Blessed One, together with Indra and Brahma and the retinue of gods, fully enjoyed it, so you have gained a very good benefit. Although it had been heard that the Brahmin's wealth had been exhausted, yet he clothed each of us in large pieces of cloth and provided us with all kinds of utensils, so we prided ourselves on having great faith in that Brahmin. Then they rebuked, saying, "Why are you monks so lacking in contentment? Monks, you are proud of the very limbs that should be ashamed of!" They slandered, reviled, and mocked. At that time, the monks reported this to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, as before, made the rule: "If a monk is having a large monastery built, from the time of surveying the land with the intention of the size of the door frame, the threshold, and the windows, he should build two or three layers of walls with plaster. If he builds more than that, he commits an offense of expiation." The place was Kausambi. The persons were the Group of Six. The affliction was delighting in evil deeds. The offense was building the monastery with more than two or three layers of walls with plaster. Here, "monk" refers to the Group of Six or anyone else like them. "Monastery" refers to a place where the four postures of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down can be done. "Large" refers to two kinds of large: large in giving and large in quantity. Here, it should be understood that it refers to both. "Having built" refers to building oneself or by others. "Door frame and threshold" refers to installing the door frame and threshold. "With the intention of the size of the windows" refers to the intention of how many windows and drains should be made. In "From surveying the land, building two or three layers of walls with plaster," "layers of walls" refers to the stacking of walls. "With plaster" refers to with earth and plaster. "Building" refers to placing. "If he builds more than that" refers to if he places more than that. "Commits an offense of expiation" refers to as before. Here, the actual classification of the offense is as follows: A monastery built by a monk, all the way up to being able to accommodate the four postures, entirely with stone or brick.
