Homage to the Buddhas of the past! Then, the Blessed One, as before, again established the precept, saying: If a bhikshu knowingly uses water with living beings to water grass, manure, or land, or causes others to water, he commits a patayantika. The place was कौशाम्बी (Kauśāmbī). The person was the one with desire. The affliction was negligence. The offense was knowingly using water with living beings for purposes other than one's own use. Among these, the so-called "bhikshu" refers to the one with desire or others of the same kind. The so-called "knowingly" means that he himself knows it, or others have told him. The so-called "with living beings" means that there are two kinds of living beings: those that are visible to the eye and those that can be caught by a water strainer. The so-called "water" is the water itself. The so-called "grass" is the grass itself. The so-called "manure" is the manure itself. The so-called "land" is also the land itself. The so-called "watering" is doing it oneself. The so-called "causing others to water" is having others do it. The so-called "commits a patayantika" is as mentioned before. Here, the patayantika of using something with living beings and the patayantika of using water with living beings that will be mentioned below have the same general characteristics. The difference is that this one refers to using it for non-self-use purposes and causing others to use it, and the objects of these two are different. The latter refers to using it for self-use purposes and causing others to use it, and the objects of these two are different. Among these, the distinction of the fundamental patayantika here is: if a bhikshu knowingly uses water with living beings to water grass, manure, or land, etc., for non-self-use purposes, or causes others to water, and ultimately causes each living being born in the animal realm to die, then he commits the fundamental offense of using something with living beings. The agent here is the one who mainly has the perception of water with living beings for non-self-use purposes. For this, there are five limbs that lead to the fundamental patayantika: any non-self-use object, any living being belonging to the animal realm, having a perception of it, using it, and the living being.

However many have died. Among those, if the limbs are incomplete, they are reproached accordingly. This is the nineteenth Defeat concerning the use of living beings. The basis for discussing the Defeat concerning monasteries is as follows: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was residing in the Kundgarama of Gadhjana in Kaushambi. At that time, the venerable Six Groups were dwelling in a monastery built by others, engaging in mockery and ridicule, and the monks were reproaching them. The venerable Dunda developed arrogance. He saw a wealthy Brahmin in Kaushambi, who had much wealth, great enjoyment, extensive possessions, was stingy, narrow-minded, and would not even give food to crows, hoarding all his belongings. Dunda developed faith and praised the seven foundations for meritorious deeds arising from material possessions. The Brahmin promised to build a monastery and offered karshapana, saying, "Venerable ones, I have karshapana, but I do not have a companion for merit." Dunda said, "I will be your companion for merit. In this way, allow me to be appointed as a craftsman by the Sangha." That Brahmin went to the monastery and requested the Sangha. At that time, the venerable Shariputra was serving as the steward of the Sangha. He said to Dunda, "Venerable Dunda, when I had the Victory Grove built, no one appointed me as a craftsman. When the venerable Great Exhorter had the Kundgarama of Gadhjana built, no one appointed him as a craftsman. If you also wish to have a monastery built, allow it to be done without being appointed." The venerable Dunda thought, "Those black-bowled ones do not even like to see me, how could they appoint me as a craftsman and develop faith?" So he went to that Brahmin, took the karshapana, and went to the brickmakers, plasterers, carpenters, painters, artists, and laborers, gave them the karshapana, and in just one day, they built a large three-story monastery, including the location of the door frame, the location of the foundation, the location of the windows, and the location of the water well.
