It is so. 'That itself is the cause' means it is not other. 'Having suppressed later' means having suppressed with harm. 'Mat' means dwelling place. 'Sleeping' means lying down the body. 'Sitting' means thieves have placed. 'Offense' means as before. Therein, here the fundamental offense is separately established: If a monk, not compelled by illness or fear, with the intention of annoyance, in the monastery of the Sangha, knowing that another monk has already entered, the later one, in order to make the harmed one leave, with that as the cause, having suppressed later, sleeping or sitting on the mat, then it becomes the basis of the offense of later suppression. The agent of this, if not compelled by illness or fear, in the monastery of the Sangha, the one who mainly recognizes the other monk who entered earlier, is the agent. This has five branches, becoming a fundamental offense: namely, the one who is later suppressed; and, the one who is later suppressed, who is a monk; and, where the later suppression is done, which is the monastery of the Sangha; and, recognizing it there; and, having the intention of annoyance; and, later suppressing not compelled by illness or fear. Among those, if the branches are incomplete, then it is mitigated accordingly. The offense of later suppression is the seventeenth. The origin of the introductory story of the offense of entering the root: The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, the venerable Nearsang encouraged the new monks, saying: Venerable ones, please come! Let's go on a tour, and there we will also subdue the opponents, and also proclaim our own fame, and also accomplish gains, and also free you from the busyness of begging bowls, Dharma robes, nets, bowls, belts, scriptures, recitations, chanting, yoga, attention, and attending to the sick. When the monks knew that this was a bad dwelling place, practicing everywhere, then, no one went on a tour with him.

was unwilling to go. A beggar said, 'Venerable Near-Joy, I will go on a pilgrimage with you.' The monks said to that beggar, 'That beggar practices all kinds of evil deeds, he will hinder you.' The beggar said, 'I am old, and for me, there is no need to rely on dwelling, learning, reading, reciting, yoga, and contemplation at all, what can he do to me?' He invalidated the words of those monks and went on a pilgrimage with him. When Near-Joy crossed the outer boundary, he said, 'Beggar, take this bowl for a while.' Venerable Near-Joy said, 'Have you not seen the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha? What is the use of this useless utensil?' Near-Joy said, 'Beggar, why don't you take it for a while? Do you think you are smarter than me? Why do you say that to me?' The beggar said, 'Even if I am not smart, I am just talking about reason.' Near-Joy thought, 'I will make this beggar unhappy.' Thinking, the two of them gradually traveled and walked, and when they arrived at the side of a monastery in a rocky mountain, the Sangha in the monastery struck the gavel of the dwelling, and the beggar went inside. Near-Joy and himself obtained a dwelling and sat down. Near-Joy was distracted by the noisy talk outside and did not come until dusk. That beggar prepared Near-Joy's bed upstairs, and prepared the foot washing water and foot rubbing things, and washed his feet outside the monastery himself, and entered the lower room to prepare the bed and sleep. When his eyes were closed, Near-Joy came and knocked on the door, and the beggar did not open the door, saying, 'Go to sleep on the bed prepared upstairs.' Near-Joy climbed upstairs, washed his feet, entered the room, and called out to the beggar, and the beggar said, 'Venerable Near-Joy, what is the matter?' Near-Joy was proficient in sound, so he pointed the leg of the bed directly at the place where the beggar was, and in any case, he wanted the leg of the bed to penetrate the roof.
