Regarding circumambulation, it starts from the steward himself. Regarding circumambulation, it starts from the doorway. The phrase "except for such causes" means establishing such causes. The phrase "it is an offense" is the same as before. Here, the fundamental offenses are specifically established: If a bhikkhu, regarding a monastery of the sangha, which is not of the nature of a stone or sandy foundation, etc., because of the fault of being damp and producing small insects, etc., either himself or through others, lays down a mat of grass or leaves, does not gather it up, or does not allow it to be gathered up, or does not entrust it to a resident bhikkhu, and if it exceeds the boundary of forty-nine cubits, even if the monastery does not become a fault, if he sleeps or enters into samadhi there, and the monastery becomes a fault, even if he does not exceed the vicinity, it becomes the basis for the offense of the mat. The agent here is the monastery of the sangha itself, which is not of the nature of a stone or sandy foundation, etc., because of the fault of producing small insects, etc., either himself or through others, making a mat of grass and leaves, etc., these are the agents. Here, five limbs become the fundamental offense: the monastery of the sangha itself, either himself or through others, because of such a fault, laying it down on the foundation, not gathering it up, or not allowing it to be gathered up, or not entrusting it to a resident bhikkhu and exceeding the vicinity, sleeping or entering into samadhi there, and whatever fault such as small insects occurs. If those limbs are not complete, then according to the circumstances, there is blame. The offense of the mat is the fifteenth. The basis of the offense of expulsion is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, the venerable Udayin said to the new bhikkhus: Venerable ones, come here! Let us go on a pilgrimage, and there we will also subdue the opponents, and also proclaim our own fame, and also accomplish gains, and you also take your alms bowls, Dharma robes, nets, begging bowls, belts, etc.

Then, they happily thought: We should not be disturbed by teaching the Dharma, reciting, chanting, yoga, and contemplation. So, Kalodayin let those people arrange their own lodgings, and they went to the vicinity of the monasteries in the mountain rocks. In that monastery, the Sangha rang the gandi at the bedding places. Kalodayin's attendants entered the monastery, and after receiving their respective lodgings for Kalodayin and themselves, they stayed there. However, Kalodayin was distracted by idle chatter outside and did not come until dusk. Those people had already prepared the bedding for Kalodayin, and after asking each other, they went to sleep. When they had just fallen asleep, Kalodayin came, knocked on the door, and drove those attendants out. Those people had nowhere to go, and they suffered from cold and illness in the open air. The next morning, they got up early, went to Shravasti (Mnyan-yod, ancient Indian city), and told the monks in detail what they had encountered. Some monks who were dissatisfied with the actions of the monks scolded: Why do these monks drive monks out of the Sangha's monastery? They began to complain and scold. At this time, the monks reported to the Blessed One. Then, the Blessed One said as before: If a monk is angry, agitated, arrogant, and dissatisfied, and drives a monk out of the Sangha's monastery, or instructs others to drive him out, unless there is a valid reason, he commits a Patayantika offense. The place where this event occurred was Shravasti (Mnyan-yod). The person was Kalodayin. The affliction was hatred. The offense was driving a monk out of the Sangha's monastery. Among them, "monk" refers to Kalodayin or other similar people. "Angry, agitated, arrogant, and dissatisfied" refers to being controlled by anger and the power of anger. "Sangha" refers to the Tathagata's Shravaka Sangha. "From the monastery" refers to the place where four activities—walking, standing, sitting, and lying down—can be performed. "Monk" refers to this person. "Driving out" refers to driving out personally. "Instructing others to drive out" refers to driving out through others. "Unless there is a valid reason" refers to excluding valid reasons. "Commits a Patayantika offense" refers to what was said before.
