There is not just one type of lying. Lying can lead to defeat, to remaining in the Sangha, to a gross offense, to an offense entailing forfeiture, and to a misdeed. So, what is lying that leads to defeat? For example, a monk, not having it, claims to possess superior human qualities. What is lying that leads to remaining in the Sangha? For example, a monk, being angry and hateful, thinking, "By any means, I will separate this one from the Brahmacharin life," groundlessly accuses a pure and faultless monk of a transgression that leads to defeat. What is lying that leads to a gross offense? For example, a monk, intentionally thinking within the Sangha, teaches what is not Dharma as Dharma, and what is Dharma as not Dharma, and what is not Vinaya as Vinaya, and what is Vinaya as not Vinaya. What is lying that leads to a misdeed? For example, a monk, during the recitation of the Pratimoksha Sutra every half month, when asked, "Are you pure in this?" remains silent without speaking, even though he is not pure. What is lying that leads to an offense entailing forfeiture? For example, all other lies besides those four types of lying are offenses entailing forfeiture. The term 'offense entailing forfeiture' means that it burns, cooks, and causes beings to fall into hell, animals, hungry ghosts, evil realms, bad destinies, and wrong views. Furthermore, if that offense is not abandoned and confessed separately, it obstructs virtuous qualities, therefore it is called an offense entailing forfeiture. Here, the classification of the fundamental offense is as follows: Lying other than that which leads to defeat, leads to remaining in the Sangha, leads to a gross offense, and leads to a misdeed, that is, transforming the perception of an object known to be true and lying, thinking, "I am lying," and after lying, thinking, "I have lied," this becomes the fundamental offense of lying. The agent of this is the one who transforms the perception of an object known to be true.

Here, five branches become the actual downfall: namely, distorted perception, self-declaration, the listener belonging to the human realm and abiding in their own nature, the falsehood that becomes a downfall, and the understanding of the meaning by others. If these branches are incomplete, then there is mild reproach as appropriate. The downfall of lying is the first. The basis for the downfall of speaking of faults is as follows: The Buddha Bhagavan was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, the group of six monks would say to the monks: "Blind ones, lame ones, base ones, those with crippled fingers, hunchbacks, dwarfs, pockmarked ones, mutes, deaf ones, cross-eyed ones, wrynecks, those with drooping lips, big-headed ones," and so on, always speaking of people's faults. Therefore, the monks became discouraged, humiliated, and timid, abandoning learning, reciting, chanting, yoga, contemplation, and inner mental quiescence, and dwelling in suffering and unhappiness. A few monks began to scold, mock, and ridicule. The monks reported this matter to the Bhagavan. Thereafter, the Bhagavan, as before, established the precept: "If one speaks of people's faults, it is a downfall." The place was Shravasti, the individuals were the group of six, the affliction was the failure to properly restrain speech, and the offense was speaking of people's faults. Among these, speaking of people's faults means: thinking of speaking of people's faults, uttering the sound of words, the action of speech, and the verbal expression. The meaning of "downfall" is the same as before. Here, the classification of the actual downfall is: If a monk, desiring to speak of the faults of a monk, whether with gentle words or harsh words, speaks of the form of the fault with any unpleasant thought, even if it does not make the other person unhappy, it becomes the actual offense of the downfall of speaking of faults. The agent here is the one who desires to speak of the fault, and the object is the monk himself. Here, five branches become the actual

it will fall. If the other person is a Bhikshu, wanting to speak of faults, speaking any of one's own words, or any thought that is not considered a fault, and the other person understands the meaning. If these conditions are not complete, then reprimand as appropriate. This is the second downfall of speaking of faults. The basis for the downfall of making slander is: The Buddha, the Bhagavan, was in Shravasti, residing in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the Anathapindika's Garden. At that time, the group of six Bhikshus often engaged in slander towards the Bhikshus. They made the Bhikshus arrogant, humble, and discouraged, thus abandoning learning, reading, reciting, yoga, contemplation, and the inner peace of mind. In this way, they cut off the long-standing, Dharma-related friendships, thereby slandering those Bhikshus who were content with little, abandoning them, and speaking harsh words. At that time, the Bhikshus reported this to the Bhagavan. Then, the Bhagavan, as before, established the precept: If a Bhikshu engages in slander, he commits a downfall. The place was Shravasti. The persons were the group of six. The affliction was the thought of discord. The offense was engaging in slander towards the Bhikshus. Among these, "engaging in slander towards the Bhikshus" means: with the thought of engaging in slander, speaking language, words, terms, expressions, definite words, the path of words and the sound of words, the action of speech and the expression of speech. "Committing a downfall" is as before. Among these, here the fundamental downfall is classified: A Bhikshu who wants to engage in slander, saying to another Bhikshu, "So-and-so Bhikshu said this," speaking any words of slander, will constitute the fundamental downfall of engaging in slander. The agent of this offense is: the thought of discord itself, and both parties being slandered are Bhikshus. Having five conditions will constitute a fundamental downfall: the thought of discord itself, both parties being slandered are Bhikshus, speaking any of one's own words, speaking face to face, and the other person understanding the meaning. Among these conditions,
