Return. Thus, one should abandon previous feelings, which arise from hunger. One should not generate new feelings! This arises from excess. This abandons small and excessive amounts of food. Saying 'Thus' is to correctly show moderation. What is the use of abandoning previous feelings? One discerns that it nourishes oneself, increases strength, and brings happiness. What is the use of not generating new feelings? One discerns that one abides in faultless contact. Therefore, because there is no fault of eating too much food, one should know that it is faultless. Those faults are five: distraction, displeasure, vomiting, indigestion, and discouragement. A light body that is in accordance with practice is for the sake of abiding in comfort, one should know that one abides in contact. With what thought should one not eat, with what thought should one eat, and what are the benefits of eating a certain amount? Having examined those aspects separately, one eats, therefore one eats food after examining it separately. Another explanation is that, in general, this meaning is different: the four ways arising from happiness, mental happiness, joy, association, laughter, sexual intercourse, and enjoyment cause the complexion of householders to become radiant. In contrast, other renunciants, because they delight in abandoning desires, and because they have not obtained desires, and because they pursue meaning, and because they are particularly attached to obtaining resources and enjoying them, appear to have an unpleasant complexion. Having abandoned those proximate afflictions, the complexion of truly renunciants appears radiant, therefore the gods asked about the cause of the radiant complexion. Even without the cause of the radiant complexion—those afflictions—why does the complexion of truly renunciants still become radiant? 'Not attached to the past.' The Blessed One extensively prophesied. The summary of the meaning of the verses is the summary of the sixth meaning. Rejoicing in the Dharma, delighting in the Dharma. Recollecting all Dharmas, reflecting on them properly. A mindful bhikshu does not decline from the Dharma. This is the verse. Why was this verse spoken?
