Thus, even residing in monasteries, there are those who do not practice pure conduct, like those who engage in impure conduct for the sake of having children. "Those who eat one meal" refers to the antidote to the happiness arising from eating during times of abundant food. This is a briefly stated verse. The answering verse is: "Not attached to the past," which is extensively explained. Those who have completely abandoned the aspects of near afflictions and are free from the three kinds of craving will have a clear complexion. Among them, the three kinds of craving are divided according to time: craving for views, craving for present pleasure, and craving for special attachment. Craving for views is for things seen, heard, distinguished, and known. Craving for present pleasure is for the future self and various possessions. Craving for special attachment is for what is happening now, characterized by not completely abandoning the present aggregates and possessions. Another explanation is that those who are free from the four kinds of craving will have a clear complexion. Based on what did the Blessed One say in other sutras about craving, rebirth, having joyful attachment, and delighting in this and that? Among them, craving refers to the past. Rebirth refers to the future. Having joyful attachment refers to what is happening now. Joy refers to making one joyful, having the attachment of afflicted mental pleasure, which is its synonym. Delighting in this and that refers to the past, future, and what is happening now. Another explanation is that the meaning of these four words should be understood from the attainment and non-attainment of self and possessions. Existence refers to the attainment of self. Rebirth refers to non-attainment. Having joyful attachment refers to the objects that are happening now. Delighting in this and that refers to the future objects. "Having mindfulness and distinct awareness" refers to those who have wisdom and mindfulness, who are called truly renunciates. Awareness refers to non-afflicted wisdom, by which one can guard body, speech, and mind.

That is, acting with mindfulness. Among them, mindfulness is focusing on walking and coming and going, etc. Therefore, one should eat with discriminating observation, free from afflictions such as craving for the future, constantly clinging to the present, and being reluctant to let go of the past. As stated in the Sutra of Delight: "Here, son of good family, delight should eat with discriminating observation, not for indulgence, not for obesity, not for pleasure, not for adornment, but only for maintaining the existence and survival of this body, eliminating hunger, and benefiting the practice of pure conduct. Thus, past feelings should be abandoned, new feelings should not be generated, and one should maintain life, increase strength, obtain happiness, and abide in the touch of blamelessness." Not for indulgence, like young people. Indulgence is unrestrained, and they eat with the intention of pursuing beauty. Not for obesity, like strong men, who eat with the pleasure of having a strong body. Not for pleasure, not for adornment, like those who enjoy sensual pleasures, who eat for pleasure and adornment with the intention of pursuing beauty. Among them, pleasure refers to bathing, anointing, and wiping. Adornment refers to decorating with clothes and garlands, etc. One should prevent eating with such intentions. To maintain the body's existence and survival means only to continue life and strength. Life is longevity, and strength is survival. For this, it is like applying oil to the axle of a chariot. Eliminating hunger means avoiding the suffering of hunger, like healing a wound. To benefit the practice of pure conduct means relying on the body's existence, the body's strength, and the body's freedom from illness, thereby cultivating the noble path. What is pure conduct? It is the eightfold noble path, as stated in the sutra.
