The treatise called 'Summary of the Meaning of Verses.' By Vasubandhu. The treatise called 'Summary of the Meaning of Verses.' By Vasubandhu. In Sanskrit: Śāstra-gāthārtha-saṃgraha-nāma. In Tibetan: The treatise called 'Summary of the Meaning of Verses.' Volume One. Homage to youthful Mañjuśrī! Such an excellent and great ascetic like you, chief of men, is not found in the heavenly realms or on earth. He is not in this world, nor in the abode of Vaiśravaṇa. He is not in the excellent abodes of the palaces of the gods, nor in the directions or intermediate directions. Even if one were to search everywhere in the flourishing lands with mountains and forests, where would he be found? This is the verse. This verse is to distinguish the Blessed One, Śākya Muni, who became a Bodhisattva, from those who are considered chiefs of men, who are the special owners of specifically determined places, by remembering for seven days and being of the nature of accomplishing the perfection of diligence. The Blessed One, the king of stars, has all the qualities complete, and thus it is evident that he speaks of uncommon completeness. Among them, the special owners of specifically determined places are those who are considered particularly excellent in the worlds: in the heavenly realms are Brahmā, the Twins, Tuṣita, and Paranirmitavaśavartin. Because it is connected to the earth, it is on the earth: on the summit of Mount Meru is Indra. In one direction there is a god, therefore it is called an excellent place. On the north side of the four steps is Vaiśravaṇa's son. The directions are the sons of Vaiśravaṇa, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Virūḍhaka, and Virūpākṣa. The intermediate directions are like houses stacked on top of Mount Meru, wielding vajras in their hands. They are devoid of compassion, abandonment, and wisdom. The Blessed One, with the virtuous results obtained by them, and in every way not the same as the fruit, how can one see the difference? The special owners of determined places are considered the best of men: in this world are the emaciated one and the powerful one.

That is to say, individuals and so on. Those also, because they possess afflictions and suffering, their bodies and minds are not completely pacified. They are not the same as the Shravakas, let alone compared to the Bhagavan. In many generations and prosperous years, and in decorated and undecorated lands, those who are revered as the foremost are the Brahmins and kings, but they, too, because of their evil thoughts and actions, are not even like the Shravakas of those Shravakas. Those who generally attain liberation, the Pratyekabuddhas and Shravakas, dwelling in mountains, uncovered places, cemeteries, and gardens, they cannot, through the teachings of the great deeds praised by the Tathagata, the universal proclamation, and the subsequent miraculous transformations, save all sentient beings from their afflictions. And those who consider themselves great practitioners, such as the Samkhya and Owl schools, etc., also, because they lack the distinction of renunciation, wisdom, and compassion, are not the same as the Bhagavan. Precisely for this reason, it is said: Your Buddha-dharma is incomparable, surpassing with excellent distinction. Another way is that, through the demonstration and narration of the Bhagavan's qualities, he is appropriately shown to be the teacher of all sentient beings. As in, "Such a chief among men, other great practitioners like you are not in the heavenly realms or on earth." This is the demonstration. The remainder is the separate explanation of these two. The saying, "Nor is there in this world," refers to the earth. The saying, "Nor is there in the abode of Vaishravana, nor in the excellent places of the palaces of the gods," refers to the heavenly realm. The saying, "Nor is there in the various directions and corners," refers to the earth, the directions being the four great continents, and the corners being the eight subcontinents. The saying, "Nor is there in the various directions and corners," refers to the earth. The saying, "Even if one were to roam all over the vast earth with mountains and forests," refers to everything from Mount Yoke-Bearing to the great wheel. In short, this verse shows the Bhagavan's superiority over the three realms. The saying, "There is none in the heavenly realms or on earth," shows the transcendence over the three realms. Others consider it to be transcendence over the desire realm.
