This is how it is done. If asked, what is the basis of generosity without delusion? If there is no particular attachment to that object and no hatred towards the recipient, but one does not know that the fruit of generosity is great enjoyment, and one does not know the relationship between cause and effect, then it will not become generosity. If there is no confusion about the relationship between cause and effect, no hatred towards the recipient, and no particular attachment to that object, and therefore one gives, that is the basis. Motivation is to examine when determining a mind that does not possess such a basis. The object of support is the object to be given, upon which the act of giving is based. The nature is accomplished through the actions of body and speech. If asked, how is it perfect? Because one gives repeatedly, impartially, and completely fulfilling desires. Therefore, the Blessed One said, "Son of good family, one who has become a generous donor gives to monks, Brahmins, those who have entered the path, beggars, the hungry, and the poor, such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles, and so forth." The term "one who has become a generous donor" means that because one is in that state and in order to give, one repeatedly demonstrates generosity itself. The phrase "to monks or Brahmins" and so forth, is to show impartial generosity because one gives to all who are in need. The phrase "food, drink, clothing, vehicles" and so forth, refers to giving the basis of resources completely according to one's intention, and therefore shows generosity that completely fulfills desires. If one wants to elaborate on this definitive talk, it will spread out in many ways, so let it be placed in the field. This is the seventeenth meaning summarized from the summary of the meaning of the verses. What are these discarded things? Scattered in all directions and corners, like the color of rust. Seeing these, what is there to be happy about? This is the verse. Why did the Blessed One say these things? It appears that it was said to counteract the four types of attachment. The four types of attachment are the attachment of reverence.

And, attachment to form, attachment to color, and attachment to touch. What are these abandoned? This is said to be the antidote to attachment to veneration. Scattered in all directions, this is said to be the antidote to attachment to form. Bone is said to be the antidote to attachment to touch. Like the color of a dove, this is said to be the antidote to attachment to color. In another way, this verse shows five kinds of impermanence: destruction is impermanence, separation is impermanence, change is impermanence, the state of proximity is impermanence, and the state of nature is impermanence. What are these abandoned? This shows that destruction is impermanence, because from the destruction of the power of life, they will be abandoned. Scattered in all directions, this shows that separation is impermanence. Bone like the color of a dove, this shows that change is impermanence, because the color will change to another. Seeing it, this shows that the state of proximity is impermanence. These three kinds of impermanence are called proximity at this present time. What is there to be happy about in this? This shows that the state of nature is impermanence, because this is also the nature of that kind. Therefore, seeing the three kinds of impermanence close to the dead body, one's own living body is also of that kind of nature, what is there to be happy about in this? Therefore, it is evident that this verse was spoken by the Blessed One in order to make those who are particularly attached to the body feel disgusted. Summary of the meaning of the verses, this is the summary of the eighteenth meaning. Alas! Conditioned things are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen, they will perish, they are the happiness of peace. This is the verse. Why did the Blessed One say this? It is evident that it was said in order to generate factors in accordance with liberation by showing the faults and merits of samsara and nirvana to those who are very happy with samsara. Here, someone argues like this: Alas! Conditioned things are impermanent, having said that, one should not say the nature of arising and ceasing. Because permanence is
