Having diligence in abandoning, giving increases merit. This is to combine correct practice with giving. With correct discipline, enemies and the like are overcome, this is patience. Possessing virtue, one abandons evil, this is the realization of truth. When desire, hatred, and ignorance are exhausted, one attains excellent nirvana, this is having diligence in abandoning all defilements. In the summary of the meaning of the verses, the summary of the fifteenth meaning. Even if adorned, one practices the Dharma, being tamed and truly restrained, one practices pure conduct. Abandoning harm to all beings, that is the Brahmin, that is the Shramana, that is the Bhikshu. This is the verse. Why did the Blessed One speak this? To abandon the pride of Shramanas and others that arises from holding onto appearances. Therein, practicing the Dharma is divided into two: accomplishing one's own qualities and accomplishing the qualities of others. Tamed and truly restrained, one practices pure conduct. This is accomplishing one's own qualities. Abandoning harm to all beings, this is accomplishing the qualities of others by abandoning harm. Depending on cultivation, there are four ways to accomplish one's own qualities: cultivating the body, cultivating discipline, cultivating the mind, and cultivating wisdom. Depending on cultivating the body, one is tamed by guarding the doors of the senses. Depending on cultivating discipline, one is peaceful because the actions of body, speech, and mind are without fault. Depending on cultivating the mind, one is truly restrained by harming all afflictions. Depending on cultivating wisdom, one practices pure conduct by possessing the pure conduct of the eightfold noble path. In accomplishing the qualities of others, it should be known that there are four ways to abandon harm: by cultivating the body, one abandons the harm caused by the practice of mindfulness; by cultivating discipline, one abandons the harm caused by the practice of truly taking vows; by cultivating the mind, one abandons the harm caused by the practice of subduing; by cultivating wisdom, one abandons the harm caused by the practice of severing. That is the Brahmin, that is the Shramana, that is the Bhikshu. This is because of abandoning evil, generating

In order to attain the path of liberation, and in order to destroy afflictions, this is said in order. The summary of the meaning of the verses, from the summary of the sixteenth meaning. Faith and shame, discipline and generosity, these dharmas are praised by the noble ones. It is said that from this path one can go to the heavenly realms, by this one goes to the world of the gods. This is the verse. Why did the Blessed One say these? It is to abandon the evil paths of those who desire higher rebirth but enter fire, water, and do not eat, etc. Because with faith and a sense of shame, one perfects intention; with discipline and generosity, one perfects action; and the rest shows the benefits of both in this life and the next. Being praised by the noble ones is the benefit of this life. It is said that from this path one can go to the heavenly realms, which belongs to the category of being praised by the noble ones. By this one goes to the world of the gods, which is the benefit of the next life. The order of the two is because the former is the cause. If one has faith, one will avoid the discipline of licentiousness and the faults of stinginess. If one has a sense of avoidance, one will rely on the generosity and discipline that are its antidotes. Therefore, the word "therefore" is said twice. The word "also" is to show that generosity also arises immediately after a sense of shame. Among these, faith is a clear mind. A sense of shame is being ashamed of one's own bad actions. Discipline is the action of good conduct and vows. Generosity is based on the ground, motivation, support, and nature. There are three bases for generosity: non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance. Ground, function, cause, and reason are different names. If asked, how is non-attachment the basis of generosity? If one is not attached to that thing, one will give it away. If asked, how is non-hatred the basis of generosity? Even if one is not attached to that thing, if one is hateful towards the recipient, one will not give it away. If one has no hatred towards the recipient and no particular attachment to that thing, then one will give it away.
