Sonam (བསོད་ནམས, merit) activities are spoken of in terms of their results. "May aspirations be perfectly fulfilled," this arises from ethics. The word "by ethics" should be added, because it will appear as "the aspiration endowed with ethics will be fulfilled." "Quickly attain the supreme enlightenment and nirvana," this arises from meditation, and it is evident that this arises from the meditation of constant occurrence and respectful practice. Enlightenment is nirvana in the realm of nirvana with the remainder of aggregates, and nirvana is without the remainder of aggregates. This arising should be understood as its own nature, like a house made of grass and a vessel made of leaves. Furthermore, what is the meaning of the object of meritorious action? These three are respectively merit, action, and object, so they are objects of meritorious action. For the time being, the object of meritorious action arising from generosity includes all three aspects of body, speech, and mind, and is both merit, action, and object of meritorious action, and also the object of meritorious action. The mind that arouses all of this is merit and action. The dharmas that arise simultaneously with it are merit itself. The object is the action of body and speech itself. What arises from ethics is only the action of body and speech in three forms. What arises from meditation, such as love and compassion, is also the object of merit and action, because the mind that is correspondingly endowed with it is manifested through love and compassion. Alternatively, the act of merit is meritorious action, that is, the practice of merit. Its object is those, and for the purpose of accomplishing those, the practice of merit is undertaken. Furthermore, what is the difference in the maturation of the object of meritorious action arising from generosity? Due to the difference of the giver, the object, and the field, the difference in the fruit will occur, and the difference of the giver is due to having qualities such as faith, ethics, and learning, as well as respect, one's own hand, and timeliness.
