Therefore, it possesses harmless giving. By giving with faith, all resources are perfected. By giving with respect, obtaining honor is perfected. By giving from one's own hand, delight in vast enjoyment is perfected. By giving at the right time, obtaining timely enjoyment is perfected. By giving without harm, obtaining unobstructed enjoyment is perfected. Monks, these five are the giving of a great person, which accords with the sutras. Thus, for the time being, it is the distinction of the giver, from which distinction it transforms into the distinction of ripening. The distinction of objects is the perfection of color and so on. If whatever is to be given, whether it is color, smell, taste, or touch, any one of them is perfect, then that object becomes a distinction. What kind of ripening is there from giving such a distinguished object? In order, it is said to be having a beautiful form, having fame, having joy, and having a body that is very young and comfortable to touch at all times. By giving a perfect color, one becomes beautiful. By giving a perfect smell, one becomes endowed with fame, because fame spreads in all directions like a smell. By giving a perfect taste, one becomes joyful, like a delicious taste. By giving a perfect touch, this body becomes very young and tender, and comfortable to touch at all times, like the skin of a precious woman. The field is distinguished by the qualities of beings, suffering ones, and benefactors. From the distinction of beings, for the time being, it becomes a distinction, as the Blessed One said: If one gives to beings born in the animal realm, one should expect to receive a hundredfold ripening. If one gives to a person who observes morality, one should expect to receive a thousandfold ripening. From the distinction of suffering, it becomes a distinction, such as giving to those who have suddenly encountered disasters, travelers, and the sick, objects of merit arising from wealth.

Giving, as well as giving to the sick, and giving to those in need of things, etc., having said this, a son or daughter of good family who possesses these seven material objects of merit arising from material things, whether walking, sitting, sleeping, or awake, constantly and continuously increases merit, and merit will continue to arise, just as it is said. Here, the difference in suffering arises from the difference in conditions, because there is no difference in the suffering of receiving, so it becomes a difference in the fruit of the giver. What is the difference in benefiting others? Mothers and fathers, and others who benefit others, just like the story of the bear's reincarnation, because seeing that benefiting others will produce the fruit of harm, one should infer the fruit of repaying the benefit. In terms of the difference in qualities, if one gives to those who uphold morality, then the ripening fruit will become a hundred thousand times greater, and so on. The ripening of merit is happiness. Thus, the difference in the objects of merit arising from giving has been explained. The fruit arising from morality is good rebirth and the attainment of liberation, because it is the cause of practice and attainment. How can one achieve one's wishes through upholding morality? Because it is completely pure, it shows the morality. The complete purity of morality is the collection of practicing liberation, just like this: guarding the sense gates, knowing the measure of food, the empty part of the night, not sleeping in the lower half of the night and diligently practicing yoga, abiding in mindfulness. So, what is complete purity like? Because it is not harmed by harmful things. So, which four harms cause harm? If harm is caused by the impurity of morality, then it is impurity, namely: the harm of conceptual thought, the harm of the fitness of the basis, the harm of non-diligence, and the harm of regret. The antidote to the harm of conceptual thought is guarding the sense gates. The antidote to the harm of the fitness of the basis is knowing the measure of food, mentioning the measure is to avoid food that is too little or too much.
