If food is scarce, the body is weak and not conducive to joy; if food is abundant, it leads to the five faults of laziness, etc., making the body unsuitable for practice. Thus, both extremes make the body unsuitable for practice, and avoiding them aligns with virtue. The antidote to the harm of non-diligence is to exert oneself without sleeping during the early and late parts of the night. The antidote to the harm of regret is to abide in mindfulness. Such is the distinction of discipline. What arises from meditation is, in brief, the mundane and supramundane paths. The mundane path consists of the dhyānas and formless attainments. These are to be understood through defilement, purification, establishment, and cleansing. How is it defiled? The four unexpressed roots—desire, views, pride, and ignorance—defile. Through desire, the meditator is defiled by the taste of pleasure, experiencing the taste of highly cultivated bliss. Through views, the meditator with strong views is defiled, relying on meditation to generate views such as speculation about the past. Through pride, the meditator with great pride is defiled, becoming conceited by the special realizations. Through ignorance, the meditator with great doubt is defiled, not understanding reality and doubting whether the special realization that desires liberation is liberation or not. How is it purified? Those who are pure in dhyāna and formless attainments, though mundane, are called purified because they are free from the stains of all that diminishes virtue. How is it established? The first dhyāna has five branches: initial thought, sustained thought, joy, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. The second dhyāna has four branches: inner clarity, joy, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. The third dhyāna has five branches: equanimity, mindfulness, awareness, bliss, and mind.

It is the one-pointedness of mind. The fourth dhyana also has four branches: purity of equanimity, purity of mindfulness, feeling that is neither pleasure nor pain, and one-pointedness of mind. For the formless realms, there is no establishment of branches, because they are of one taste in quiescence. The divisions of the branches of the dhyanas are due to the differences in antidotes, benefits, and the basis of both. In the first dhyana, investigation and analysis are the branches of the antidote, because they abandon desire, malice, and thoughts of harming. Joy and happiness are the branches of benefit, because investigation and analysis abandon the opposing factors, and thus obtain the joy and happiness that arise from solitude. One-pointedness of mind is the branch of the basis of both, because by relying on the power of samadhi, virtuous thoughts and so on arise. In the second dhyana, inner purity is the branch of the antidote, because it abandons investigation and analysis. Happiness and joy are the branches of benefit. One-pointedness of mind is the branch of the basis of both. In the third dhyana, equanimity, mindfulness, and awareness are the branches of the antidote, because they abandon joy. Happiness is the branch of benefit. One-pointedness of mind is the branch of the basis of both. Mindfulness is not forgetting the object. Awareness is understanding sinking and excitement. Equanimity is abiding in reality after abandoning the afflictions of proximity. In the fourth dhyana, purity of equanimity and purity of mindfulness are the branches of the antidote, because they abandon happiness. The feeling that is neither pain nor pleasure is the branch of benefit. One-pointedness of mind is the branch of the basis of both. What is purity like? It is purity that has reached the ultimate, that is, purity from the first dhyana to the peak of existence. The supramundane path is the path of seeing and the path of cultivation. The path of seeing is the forbearance of the knowledge of dharma in suffering and the suffering
