Just as vomiting after eating suitable food, one cannot truly hold onto what is heard, because there is the fault of insufficient desire. On the other hand, teachings explained with three causes will not become fruitful, because due to the fault of distraction, one does not hear the words; because due to the fault of wisdom, one grasps the words and meanings incorrectly; and because due to the fault of insufficient desire, one does not respectfully listen and hold onto them, just like the Brahmin Saga and ominous signs, etc. It is like rain not entering an overturned vessel, an unclean vessel, or a leaking vessel; it is dirty and cannot hold anything, like something meaningless. Therefore, the Bhagavan said, "Listen, think well, and pay close attention," in order to abandon those vessels. "Listen" is for truly focusing on listening. "Think well" is for understanding the meaning without error. "Pay close attention" is for respectfully holding onto it. Hearing the Bhagavan's teachings brings joy, contemplation, and understanding; understanding leads to liberation, and liberation is good. Therefore, in short, the qualities of the Buddha's teachings are limitless. There are two great faults: one is that it is extremely difficult to obtain, and the other is that it does not remain for long. Therefore, one should quickly and respectfully listen. This is a summary of the meaning of the verses, a summary of the tenth meaning. Do no evil, cultivate perfect virtue, subdue your own mind, this is the Buddha's teaching. This is the verse. Why did the Bhagavan say this? In short, the Bhagavan said this in order to truly apply the teachings to practice. To encourage beings who are frightened by many activities to focus on few activities, and to encourage those who are frightened by hearing and holding onto many scriptures to incline towards listening, etc. Among these, "Do no evil" refers to those who have renounced with true faith, who abide restrained in body and speech, who live by seeking robes and other necessities through the Dharma, and who completely purify their lives. "All evil" refers to the precepts.

Because it belongs to the lower, it is of body and speech, not of mind. Saying "do not do evil deeds," because it says "all," it should be known that all places, all times, and all evil deeds should not be done. The Blessed One teaches not to do evil deeds in all places, such as the naked ascetics saying that evil deeds can be done within a hundred yojanas. Similarly, like they say: "For the measurable, from the immeasurable and infinite, Arising, completely abandoning the faultless, In other worlds, there is immeasurable happiness, One will obtain the arising of the infinite." The teaching of not doing evil deeds at all times is that what is properly taken is not lost until the end of life. It is not like Brahmins and others teaching not to do evil deeds, slaughtering livestock in pure places and so on. Similarly, for example: "King Kuri, should not speak harmful words, For women, not at the time of marriage, When life is at stake and seeking all wealth, Speaking five lies will not cause a fall." Like saying this and so on. Similarly, in the sacrifice of killing cows, those performing the sacrifice pour water into the vulva and drink it, like this and so on is not the case. The Blessed One teaches not to do all evil deeds, unlike householders who only do a little evil and not all, because they properly take the five precepts and the eight precepts. Therefore, in order to particularly show the abandonment of the monks, it is said: "Do not do all evil deeds." What is this dharma called "do not do"? It is the antidote to doing evil deeds, such as discipline and non-attachment. Goodness refers to nature, relation, subsequent relation, initiation, arising attainment, truth, combination, benefit, complete holding, leading, antidote, peacefulness, and concordant cause, is goodness. Among them, nature refers to the ten mental factors such as faith. Relation refers to the dharmas that are in accordance with it. Subsequent relation refers to the habits of these. Initiation refers to the body and speech arising from it.
