In a suitable place, you listen, unwilling even to twitch your ears. An old man, wanting offspring, takes a wife, but she is unwilling, which contradicts the Sutra Pitaka. For the Blessed One said that a woman's mind is on a man. Similarly, even if you have faith, you are unwilling to listen to the sacred Dharma, which contradicts the Sutra Pitaka. As it is said, from the sign of faith comes the desire to hear the sacred Dharma and the desire to see the noble ones, which is extensively proclaimed. A poor, wanton woman lives in a household that was once wealthy. A thief, seeking an opportunity at night, breaks into the house through a wall and, in the darkness, bumps into some empty clay pots, making a noise. The woman says, 'I search everywhere for my son during the day and find nothing; do you think you can find something in the dark?' What does this example illustrate? Even those who are intelligent and insightful find it difficult to grasp the meaning of the Buddha's teachings, let alone an evil, darkened mind. Therefore, one should respectfully listen to the Buddha's teachings. When telling the story from the *Mahabharata*, a heretical ash-covered ascetic dies, and someone says, 'Why the good departure?' He says, 'Have you not seen how much suffering that pleasure-seeker has experienced?' He says, 'This is from the *Mahabharata*, not the *Ramayana*.' He says, 'My death is meaningless.' Similarly, I teach the Dharma, but if you fall asleep, what I say is meaningless. A fox, wanting the leftovers of a lion's kill, follows behind it. Once, the lion, hungry, kills a large pig and says to the fox, 'Carry this.' The fox, being weak and powerless, cannot carry it and, fearing that the lion will become angry and kill it, is unwilling even to answer its words. This is because knowing that it is foolish and arrogant, making it carry this would be like doing two things at once—groaning and carrying. If it is to carry something, I cannot do two things at once, one is

The fox said, "You carry it!" The lion, being arrogant and unwilling to groan, said, "You make a groaning sound first, and I will give you the burden to carry." The lion carried the burden, and the fox made a groaning sound, following behind the lion. Similarly, I cannot say that if I carry the burden of teaching the Dharma, you will be in harmony with me. Therefore, listen, receive, and practice in meaning, practice well. The Blessed One also spoke of the five benefits of listening to the Dharma: to understand what is not understood, to abandon wrong views, to be certain about what is doubtful, to make what is certain more firm, and to open the eye of noble wisdom. The sun, moving in the sky, does five things: it causes people to see, it prevents owls from seeing, it ripens crops and so on, it dries up mud and so on, and it makes bodies and water and so on feel hot. Similarly, the sun of the Buddha's teachings generates correct views, dispels wrong views, fully ripens the crops of virtuous roots in the fields of those to be tamed, dries up the mud of existence, and makes demons and careless disciples feel hot. Therefore, the Buddha's teachings should be listened to. In another way, the sun does eight things: it dispels darkness, generates light, shows various forms, generates supreme joy, allows names to be applied, connects with the culmination of actions, fully ripens crops, and greatly pacifies harm. Similarly, the sun of the Tathagata's teachings dispels the darkness of ignorance, illuminates the Dharma that is taught, shows the suchness that distinguishes the truths such as suffering, generates the supreme joy of the Dharma of the noble ones, allows the application of names such as aggregates, elements, sources, and dependent origination, and connects with the culmination of actions such as discipline and guarding the doors of the senses.

And combine, make the crops of the roots of virtue of sentient beings fully ripen, and pacify the harm of all afflictions and suffering. Even if one recites many words, if one does not understand the meaning, one will not attain that meaning, just like hanging a money bag around the neck of a baby. Therefore, in order to understand that meaning from much learning, one should strive to listen to the meaning of the Buddha's teachings. Being muddled and without discernment, not falling asleep and making sounds, just as thieves steal, so too, being diligent only in sound, hearing much without discernment will also be stolen by the thieves of afflictions. Without understanding the meaning, there is also no discernment. Just as a blind person carrying a torch can only benefit others, so too, holding onto much learning without clearly understanding the meaning is the same. Therefore, in order to seek the meaning of the Buddha's teachings, one should strive to rely on a well-explaining virtuous friend. There are five benefits to relying on a well-explaining one: completely abandoning the bad path, truly abiding in the good path, transcending the solitary place and breathing, walking in bliss, and universally obtaining beautiful places. Similarly, by relying well on the excellent Dharma, one can completely abandon the bad path of wrong views, etc., universally obtain the good path of right views, etc., be liberated from the solitary place of samsara and breathe, transcend the lower realms, etc., and walk in bliss, and obtain the beautiful place of Nirvana. Three kinds of sick people cause harm: those who do not eat food, those who eat unsuitable food, and those who vomit after eating suitable food. Similarly, three kinds of sentient beings sick with afflictions harm the father of the holy Dharma, the Buddha: those who do not listen when the Dharma is taught, those who listen improperly, and those who do not retain what they have heard correctly. Just as not eating food is like not listening, because one does not enter into it. Just as eating unsuitable food is like listening improperly, because one grasps the words and meaning in a reversed way.
