Thus it is said. Where the noble ones reside, it means in which places, namely in towns and in all directions of the land, there are noble practices and noble ones residing. That land is pleasing. The term "pleasing" means that since it is land, it is that land. Since it is an object of joy, it is pleasing. Wherever the noble ones reside, that place is also exceedingly joyful because of the splendor that arises from it, and because of the gods who dwell there with joy. As it is said: Wherever the noble ones reside, it is adorned with qualities, that place is auspicious and pleasing, that itself is a platform and a forest of asceticism. Thus it is said. Wherever those with evil nature reside, all their gatherings are defiled by them. Wherever the noble Dharma resides, it becomes an adornment of the vessel world, let alone the sentient world. Therefore, relying on noble beings should not be abandoned, thus it is taught. In however many towns there are, wherever evil people reside, it is certain to be displeasing, it should be known thus. In order to explain the benefits of the noble ones, beginning with "The noble one from afar" and so on. In the city called Purna-vardhana-gamana, an Arhat was walking from far away in the sky, and was seen by Magadha Sundari, the daughter of Anathapindika, who spoke this verse spoken by the Buddhas of the past. Then, the Bhagavan also said to the monks: Recite this verse spoken by the Buddhas, the Bhagavat of the past. The term "from afar" means from a distant place, that is, from the surface of the earth to the sky, many yojanas away, it is also regarded as near, like the mandala of the sun and so on. Or, even if residing in a place other than many yojanas away, it is made clear by the fame of possessing special qualities, like the snowy mountains and so on, especially where water, medicine, and various minerals arise. What is that? It is said: The term "noble" refers to the noble person, that is, the Tathagata and others who do the most excellent things for themselves and others. The term "appears" means very clear. Like what? Like the snowy mountain.
