Some, in order to engage in near enjoyment, become like salt water, increasing desire, and abide in it. As for "If one does not restrain the senses," those who have tamed the senses abandon the enjoyment of desires, for the senses are restrained from objects, possessing true restraint and extreme restraint. The eyes, etc., are manifestly restrained from forms, etc., because they do not turn away from objects such as forms, etc., and arise exceedingly. Here, the cause is shown: "Also does not know the measure of food," because eating too much causes confusion of impurities, etc., and the senses. Therefore, "Loss of mindfulness and laziness." Laziness is when the mind is distracted by bad deeds, and there is no interest in virtuous deeds, because one abides in bad deeds. Loss of mindfulness is because of separation from the mindfulness belonging to the body. "He is overcome by desires," means that he is overcome and suppressed by faults, meaning that he is suppressed by the pervasive action of subsequent attachment. What is it like? "Like an unstable tree in the wind," for example, the force of a strong wind suppresses trees that are not rooted and small. "Possessing diligence" means having initiated diligence, that is, the one who has manifest diligence. "Individual mindfulness" means possessing mindfulness belonging to the body. "Not overcome" means not being harmed. "Like a mountain unshaken by the wind," a collection of rocks is a mountain, for example, a mountain whose nature of rock does not change, even a strong wind cannot move it. The remainder should be understood as the opposite of the previous. For the most part, one is averse to solitary places, because seeking pleasure itself is suppressed by desires, etc., so it is shown that "one should rejoice in solitary places," etc. The crowd of people living in Shravasti hold a night celebration near Jetavana, and some monks, hearing the sound of music, etc., engage in conceptualization due to conceptual thoughts of desires, etc.

It is like that. Some people, because they contemplate impermanence, develop various thoughts about renunciation and so on. Therefore, these two verses were spoken. Others say that it started from the abbot of the Sangha forest. Excellent individuals should be very fond of solitary places, because they are places of joy. Otherwise, it is a cause of distraction. Or, because it is adorned with various things such as trees, flowers, roots, and lakes. A solitary place is a remote place one yojana away from a village, because it is not occupied, so there is no dispute for it. Ra nya is war, and what is in accordance with this is: ra nya is a village. What is it that does not have that? It is ar nya, that is, a solitary place. In that, people do not like it! This refers to the fact that ordinary people cannot obtain joy, because they do not see its difference. If so, what is it that is pleasing? To this, the one who is free from desire rejoices. This is because there is no attachment or craving, and they are delighted because they are accustomed to solitary places. As it is said: Excellent ones are well trained for renunciation, therefore they rejoice there, thinking as if they have abandoned their home. The forest of leaves gnawed by the doe, it should be known that it is the most excellent house of his home. It is declared like that. Those who seek desires are not. This refers to anyone who seeks the happiness of other desires, because there is no place, so they do not rejoice in solitary places. It is also said: The one who is covered with human bones is extremely happy with the lord of the retinue; the child is happy with the village that is covered with the five qualities of desire. So, is it shown that the place relied upon by the excellent ones is pleasing? A village refers to a place with walls, with dwellings, and relied upon by many people. There, the residence of the excellent ones is adorned. If a solitary place refers to a place where people do not walk, that is, the edge of the forest. A slightly lower place in the forest is a river and a meadow of herbs, etc. A slightly higher place is the top of a mountain, a plain, and a valley, etc. This is also because both are to be shown, so it is a valley or a plain.
