It is for the sake of attaining (liberation). Suffering means falling away from (good) places. In order to correctly indicate the place, "unbearable feelings" and so on are mentioned, referring to feelings that pervade one side of the body, such as headaches. Here, the example of Devadatta suffering from a headache immediately after throwing a stone at the Blessed One should be narrated. "Or" means "or". "The body is cut" refers to the limbs of the body, such as hands and feet, being cut off and dying. Here, the Jataka tales of the Patient Sage and others should be narrated. "Heavy feelings of harm are also acceptable," which refers to long-lasting, unbearable feelings that pervade the entire body. One side of the body is withered, and hands and feet are cut off. Diseases such as leprosy and stones in the genitals, here the Monkey Jataka and others should be narrated. "Elsewhere it is called fever," meaning to truly torment. "Or the mind becomes confused," which refers to the mind being bewildered by spirits and so on, losing the ability to act, like a vase. "Separation from relatives and friends," refers to separation from or death of parents and so on, like the Crested Sage. "Enjoyment is exhausted," which refers to the enjoyment of desires or knowledge, etc., suddenly declining and separating, like a drop of water on a hot stone, such as the Warmth Jataka. "Suffering harm from the king," refers to losing fame from the ruler, losing status, cutting off food, etc., suffering very great harm, like offending the king. "Hearing very unpleasant words," refers to obtaining very unpleasant abusive words, being verbally abused for doing great evil deeds, like the son of the merchant Angada. "Or the house is by a great fire," "Surely it will be burned," which means that the house is destroyed by an unstoppable lightning strike, turning it to ashes. Hail is considered to be burning because it destroys things.

Here, too, it will be told how the vajra thunderbolt destroyed the king and his retinue. Who will change in that way? It is said that it is because one does not regret or conceal what one has done that one will change in that way. It is called "the child of corrupt wisdom." "After the body is destroyed" means that one abandons one's kind and, at the time of death, attains the tenth stage, which is to show that very thing. "Will go to the evil realms" means that one will go to the evil realms, like Kokālika. The faults of the visible dharma have been shown before, so this shows the faults of the next world. Therefore, to show that one should not be complacent about sin, it is said, "Having committed sin," and so on. In Shravasti, there were two sons of merchants named Nyu-ldang, one of whom had faith in the Three Jewels, that is, the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and generated immeasurable roots of virtue; the other was without faith and miserly. Later, both of them died, the former being born in Tushita, and the latter being born in the Howling Hell. The relatives of the two went to the Blessed One and asked where they had been born, and so on, and then the Blessed One spoke thirteen verses. "Sin" means evil conduct itself. "Done" means completely generated. "Do not be complacent" means do not trust, do not be fearless, do not be indulgent, do not be without concern. Others say that this is "trust," that is, thinking in one's heart that I have been freed from suffering and have attained happiness, this is trust, which is directed towards the distinction of satisfaction. "I have uprooted this enemy with its roots," do not be complacent. Killing and so on are because they are undesirable results, so do not be complacent or trust in sinful actions, this is the seventh reason. In general, from afar, and so on, it is not so. If you ask, then it is shown, even if it is long ago, far away, and so on, even if the seed is separated by many times, so that it cannot be remembered, the seed will not be destroyed and disappear, the fruit of sin

English

The fruit is also like that. If it is said that, like a fire far away, it does not cause harm. Here it is said, "Even if done far away," which means putting together "done for a long time" and "done far away." Do not have the expectation that even if done for a long time, done far away, the result of sin is not unpleasant. As it is said, "Actions will not be wasted." etc. Similarly, "Actions lead from afar." etc. Even in a secluded place, it means that being away from being with people is seclusion. Even if it is like that, what need is there to mention appearance? This is the tone of "also." Eating poison and touching fire are no different in any case. To show that not only at the time of action should one be careful, but also at the time of result. Therefore, it is said, "Because there is its Vipaka," etc. Because in this life it is the cause of blame and other faults, and in the next life it is the cause of falling into evil destinies. Because it ripens in different ways, it is Vipaka, meaning an unpleasant fruit. If one thinks that there are other desired fruits, that is not the case, why? The Sutra says, "Monks, whatever actions are done and accumulated with thought, I do not say that their Vipaka will not be experienced separately, sinful actions will lead to hell." etc. Unwanted fruits can also be seen in this life, therefore it exists in this way. Therefore, it is first shown that there is no desired fruit in this, so it should not be done. It is said, "Having done merit," etc., having done merit, therefore one should have complete trust. As it is widely said, "You should not be afraid of merit. Why? This is the supreme word of truth." Because merit leads to all happiness. Why should it be explained that one should not trust sin? It should be explained that it causes inner pain. Because I have done sin
