The term "ground" refers to correct mindfulness, correct thought, and the excellent words of samadhi. To possess means correct effort, entering a state free from sorrow through the power of diligent effort. The chariot refers to correct view, which is the path and the branches of the path. Because it is the fruit of what is desired to appear in the mind, it is expressed by the word chariot. Thus, it shows the eightfold path with its fruit, with correct liberation and correct wisdom being the fruit of cultivating the noble path. Any sentient being who possesses such a chariot should be known to walk without sin, and so on. Obtaining the discipline that is the root and ladder of the noble path is transformed only by refuge, and merely relying is not a refuge. To show this meaning, five verses beginning with "fear" and so on are spoken. One will surely triumph over the display of great miracles, because some non-Buddhists rely on mountains. Seeing that others rely on forests, gardens, monasteries, and trees, these words were spoken. Others think that sins should be washed away, and thinking this, these words were spoken from the perspective of a sinner named "Fire Offering" who sits on a pile of sand in front of King Kosala. "Most" means many. "Taking refuge" means relying and accepting in order to destroy sins. Mountain refers to mountains such as the snowy mountains. The word "and" is used to include sand piles and caves similar to mountains. "Forest" refers to dense forests such as gardens. The word "and" refers to places that have become forests and ponds, and so on. "Garden" refers to gardens near villages, or temples, or stupas and trees. The word "and" is for inclusion. Among them, stupa refers to temples and so on, because they are built with bricks and so on. Trees refer to the shape and location of trees that are decorated. If someone asks who should take refuge, the answer is, "People frightened by fear." Because this was said, it is for non-Buddhists who are afraid of contempt and disrespect.

Etc. In order to dispel the notion that mountains, etc., are refuges, it is stated that "refuges are not primary." It means that considering rocks, etc., as a support for saving from suffering is not primary, because merely relying on them cannot completely save. "Refuges are not supreme." It means that refuge is also not special and supreme, because relying on these cannot completely abandon samsara. Why? Because merely grasping is not a supreme refuge, thus it is declared. Thus, those who have gone for refuge will not be liberated from all suffering. It means to be liberated from the suffering of the lower realms or the suffering of samsara. In order to declare the refuge of true meaning, it is said, "Whoever is a Buddha," etc. Again, any sentient being who relies on the Three Jewels, that itself becomes a refuge. Buddha is a classification of all-knowing ones, therefore it is a collection of qualities such as the eighteen unshared dharmas. Dharma is the Dharma of true meaning, and because the nature of the ultimate fruit of nirvana is the most supreme of all that is sought. Sangha is the noble path abiding in the continuum of the Hearers, and the collection of the paths of Buddhas, Self-Buddhas, and Hearers. In order to establish that one does not take refuge in any one in a way that conforms to one's mind and follows along, therefore three "of" words are said, those are also the differences between each other. Merely taking refuge is not turning back from the lower realms, and also one must know and gain faith. That is also because of transforming by seeing the truth, that is, the four noble truths of the noble ones. It means that it is realizing what has not been seen. With wisdom, it means that when one obtains uncontaminated wisdom, then refuge is complete, this is the remainder of the sentence. In order to truly show those who have seen the truth, it is said, "Suffering," etc., that is, when one sees with wisdom, here it is in accordance. The path also
