The Blessed One declared: 'Thus, that is obtained by abandoning desire, not by enjoying desire.' In this way, two verses were spoken. The term 'desire' refers to the sake of the five qualities of desire or to its body. Whatever pervasive connection is made by pervasive union is intense attachment, distraction, and turmoil. Among these, attachment is intense clinging, meaning the act of completely grasping, accumulating, and protecting, and so forth. Alternatively, the nature of pervasive union is attachment and craving. If one asks, 'Is compassion also similar to attachment?' Because 'pervasive union' is mentioned, attachment is shown to be the bond of sentient beings, meaning distraction and attachment that are preceded by ignorance. The term 'pervasive union' is like saying 'the king has passed away.' The pervasive union spoken of here should also be understood as the nature of pervasive union, which is the nature of attachment and craving. Those who do not recognize faults and shortcomings in these pervasive unions do so because they dwell in and are attached to ignorance. If someone, through such pervasive union of desire, becomes fond of and attached to desire, then they will never cross over or abandon the river of desire and the outflows of desire, let alone anything else. Because it leads to an undesirable place, it is a river. What kind of river? 'Vast' means because it relies on and pervades all beings' nature. 'Boundless' means because it has been cultivated since beginningless existence and because it is abandoned by the essence of undefiled wisdom. Even so, to show that all four rivers can be crossed, 'supreme detachment and lowest' and so forth are mentioned. 'Supreme detachment' means because the upper pervasive union has been abandoned. 'Lowest detachment' means because the lower part of pervasive union has been abandoned. Being free from desire from everything means because all pervasive unions have been abandoned. To show that what is abandoned by seeing and what is abandoned by meditation are preliminary, 'in this' is mentioned. 'In this' refers to self and what belongs to self.

That is how to hold on to things as one's own. In order, it is to manifestly cling to forms and so on as one's own. Or, it shows the twenty peaks of the mountain of the view of the perishable aggregates, which desire the manifestation of selfhood, such as form. This is because it is not non-existent. 'Not seeing' means not following and not manifestly clinging, because all seeing and combining are abandoned. Thus, 'liberation' means that one is liberated because one has abandoned the subtle increase of the two kinds in this way. That is how one is liberated from the river, and crossing over means one will cross over. 'Never crossed before' means never abandoned before, because the river of the three existences has not been abandoned. Why does one cross the river? It shows that it is because there is no more existence, that is, in order not to be born again, and in order to turn away from suffering. It is only by meditating on the noble path that one will cross over, and not merely by completely abandoning the household life. To show this, it says, 'Whoever abandons the grove,' and so on. An old merchant who was completely weary of household life went to a monastery, took ordination, then returned and degenerated. Then, taking the example of that ordination again, he spoke these words to the monks. Others say that there was a nameless person living in the Light Garden who had taken ordination and was very changeable, and that this was said as an example of his particular attachment to his dwelling. For the time being, I will explain the meaning of this as it is. A grove is a monastery. The one who dwells there is the one who dwells in the forest, that is, the one who dwells in the monastery and has no desire for home. 'Abandoning the forest' means becoming unhappy with ordination and degenerating, or it means abandoning the forest and living at home. Again, because of weariness, unhappiness with home arises, so 'running into the forest' means heading towards the monastery itself, because one sees the benefits of ordination. This means, 'Look at the fool who is controlled by afflictions such as desire.' 'Come here' means 'Come and see.' Whoever
