Having found the absence of outflows, there is no slander of the path to Nirvana. Here, four kinds of pervasive disturbances are taught. What are the four? The pervasive disturbance of conceptualization with afflictions, the pervasive disturbance of conceptualization without afflictions, the pervasive disturbance of savoring the taste of meditative absorption, and the pervasive disturbance of slandering the path. These four are the pervasive disturbances. Having abandoned these four disturbances, one obtains the supremely peaceful Nirvana and completely enters into Nirvana. In explaining "non-harming of others," how is it that in all the scriptures, non-harming of others is highly praised? For example, it is mentioned, "Patience is the supreme asceticism." The Shravakas of the perfectly enlightened Buddha Vipashyin were very fond of asceticism and intolerant of words. As an antidote to this, the Pratimoksha was first taught. Others say that because there were nephews of the royal lineage who were quarreling and intolerant, the Buddha, considering their situation, spoke these words. Patience is of three kinds: patience with harm done by others, abiding in suffering, and the distinction of patience with firm conviction in the Dharma. The first is patience with others who scold and beat in various ways. The second is patience with cold and heat, and with disputes. The third is patience with the Dharma of selflessness. Therefore, considering patience with harm done by others and patience with abiding in suffering, the Buddha said, "Patience is the supreme asceticism." The term "supreme asceticism" means that asceticism torments afflictions. Here, the word "asceticism" refers to renunciation. Renunciation is mainly mentioned because it is the root of this. As it is said, monks, those who abide in the nature of patience are those who endure cold and heat, and this is extensively explained. Considering the result of this, which is patience with firm conviction in the Dharma, it is said, "Patience is the supreme Nirvana," that is, that which, having examined the Dharma, does not change and abides is patience.

Therefore, one can also attain Nirvana through patience. This attainment, based on the absence of outflows and preceded by patience, is highly praised by the Sugata. Monks, abandonment through noble wisdom is because it does not degenerate, as stated in the Sutra. This is to refute the emphasis on asceticism. Nirvana is attained through patience because it is the goal to be pursued. Considering asceticism as supreme is not practice, because it is the cause of samsara. Why is it said that patience is the supreme of asceticism? Renunciation with the thought of liberation is non-harming to others. For example, if someone completely abandons the household life and takes the various precepts of the Sugata, even if others harm them, they do not retaliate, let alone in other situations. If someone excessively harms others, even if they have renounced, they do not receive the title of a Shramana, because they contradict the four qualities of becoming a Shramana. Even when devoted to the conduct of the noble ones, those who are not noble are displeased, so will they harm others? It is said: "Harming others" is mentioned, which means harming others with body and speech. A Shramana does not harm others, even if harmed, they do not retaliate. Verbal harm is difficult to avoid; to prevent this, it is mentioned, "Do not speak any harsh words," and so on. The descendants of the royal lineage, if they quarrel and speak unbearable words, are shown with three verses. "Do not speak any harsh words," means do not initiate any words, and do not speak harshly. Why? If you speak, they will speak back. It means that if you speak harsh words to others, in response, they will speak more harsh words. Just as if one person is insulted by many, then many will also insult that one person. Therefore, to show that they insult and fight each other with harsh words, it is said: "If, suffering from words of strife." Strife is argument. Words that lead to strife are

This is about the meaning of harsh speech. That is mostly the cause of suffering, therefore it is suffering. Harsh speech mostly leads to ugly appearance and unsightly form. One's own relatives will also be degraded, of low birth, and so on. The suffering of the next world is put aside for the moment. In this life, it is cut off again by punishment. It means that for the abuser, it will cause harm again. If one is also insulted and beaten, even if one no longer insults and beats, the heart will be in pain, and insulting and beating oneself is also a degradation. To illustrate this, it is said, "If I did it first." It means that if one treats others with harsh speech, etc., if I or oneself did it first, that will cause pain. How is that so? Like a cane container, a thick and large cane container is a cane. If one strikes it with wood or fingers, etc., it will emit a rough sound and shake everywhere, clearly showing the state of an unpleasant object. If one strikes a container of gold, etc., it will not be like that. Similarly, a child will rely on unpleasant things and cause pain to oneself and others, but a noble one is not like that. To illustrate that doing it first will bring unpleasant results, it is said, "Birth and old age in samsara." What is represented by birth and death is existence. Long is a long time. To experience means to approach enjoyment. To illustrate the white side, it is said, "I did not do it first." This has been said before. To illustrate the benefit of doing this, it is said, "Nirvana will be attained." It means that sentient beings will attain liberation, and they will attain Nirvana before long. Like this, there will be no fighting. Because one is free from mental disturbance, etc. By abandoning fighting first, one can approach tranquility. Therefore, one will attain Nirvana. To illustrate that Nirvana is the chief of all happiness.
