In order to show that it is not so, it is said, "What is the praise of a child?" etc. The Blessed One threatened Devadatta with words such as "foolish man," and he went alone to a secluded place, and regret arose, and he thought to himself: The Blessed One spoke well. I have committed sins, and I have done those evil deeds, such as dividing the Sangha, etc., so what should I do? Thinking this, he went to the perfect one and said: Just as a clay pot is broken, there will be no rebirth after death. When Devadatta arose with wrong views, the Blessed One spoke these words in accordance with his thoughts. "What is the praise of a child?" refers to the praise of the perfect one, etc., by a fool. "What is the rebuke of the wise?" refers to what is said and rebuked by wise people, such as the Tathagata. If you ask which of the two is better, it is "the rebuke of the wise is most appropriate." Because the rebuke of the wise is most appropriate, it is the source of various special reasons. And "the praise of a child is inappropriate" means that it is not okay to hear fools say various words of praise, because it is related to various faults. Therefore, in order to avoid associating with children in every way, it is said, "Associate with children," etc. "Do not listen to children" means that you should try to make it so that your ears cannot hear. Even if you hear it, it is the root of falling into evil destinies because of causes such as greed, hatred, and evil deeds. Never put yourself in a place where you can see children, and if you want to avoid the first two situations, you should observe carefully. If there are no other children for a while, even if you hear them, you should try not to look at them. Because seeing him, you may also get used to and do very bad things. Even on the path of walking and other behaviors, you will feel pain and generate great pain. "Not being close is appropriate" means not living in the same place as children.

One should also not dwell [with them]. If one cannot abandon the former two, then dwelling together should be completely abandoned. Why? "Associating with children is suffering." Just like that, dwelling with children is suffering, because desiring merit and sin are mutually contradictory things, and generating them will bring unwanted results. "Like an enemy," for example, like dwelling with an enemy who intends to wield a sword is suffering. "In all ways," in all ways it is the same. So, if associating with the former is not suffering? "The steadfast," that is, the wise. "Associating with them brings happiness," which means those who dwell happily, associating with whom brings happiness. "Like meeting relatives," just like meeting relatives such as parents and things that one likes, that is, meeting sons and others who possess the qualities of their own nature brings happiness, and just as one makes the mind content, therefore, for that reason, it is said "therefore." Because associating with children becomes the cause of unhappiness, therefore. "The steadfast," means the one who possesses intelligence. Or, because he possesses steadfastness, through the fruit of wisdom one can recognize that he has wisdom, just like one can recognize fire through smoke. This shows the knowledge obtained through reasoning. "Much learning," because he has heard the three baskets and has the wisdom to understand them. This shows the wisdom arising from hearing and thinking, because without thinking there is no fruit of hearing. "The one who leads to excellence," excellence is the special thing that arises from cultivation, because one completely takes up the part of determination, therefore one leads to excellence. In order to show the place where special knowledge arises, it is said "possessing discipline and asceticism." Discipline is turning away from the sins of one's own nature. Asceticism is turning away from the sins of what has been prescribed, that is, possessing both of these. Or, it is the discipline of entering and turning away, or respectively the Pratimoksha vows and the vows of sense restraint. In this way, due to the power of the complete assembly, the noble path becomes manifest.
