One should not associate with foolish people in any way. 'Associating with the virtuous' means associating with virtuous individuals. It is said to show that both of these can be accomplished. 'Wise' means having the potential to know. Why is it said that one should associate with them if they know? Because the reason is that they are wise. Associating with the virtuous is primary, this is to show the benefit. 'Following their path' means that whoever one associates with, one will definitely follow their path. Following the path of good conduct, etc., of the virtuous is following the Dharma. To show the result at the end of that path, 'bhikshu' is mentioned, because they have abandoned afflictions. To show the distinction of abandoning afflictions, it is said, 'will attain the cessation of suffering.' This means that the place where suffering ceases is what is called attaining liberation. Alternatively, a bhikshu who follows the path of the non-virtuous, even if they have renounced, will still attain the place of suffering, samsara. Cessation, place, and basis are synonyms. 'Cessation of suffering' refers to the three lower realms. The wise themselves are inclined towards the good path, because they can fully realize it. It is shown that it is not others, from 'How long a child' etc., there are eight verses. The Mara was displeased with the fully victorious ordained disciples. Because one disciple and one protector can subdue so much, let alone if many disciples subdue me. Therefore, for six years, the Blessed One sought an opportunity and followed, but did not find an opportunity. When going to six great cities such as Shravasti, with malicious intent, he went into the sky and spoke evil words, 'Alas! Shramana Gautama does evil, does not know the taste of merit.' Because of relying on the noble Asvajit, he obtained excellent near victory, etc., these words were spoken by the bhikshus, and this was the main focus. 'As long as they live' means as long as they live, that is, a hundred years or a thousand years. If that is the case, then so be it.

A child is foolish, meaning that their intelligence is diminished by ignorance. To attend upon the wise means to associate with those who possess qualities such as wisdom, discipline, and near-pacification. However, that child will not understand the Dharma, nor will they comprehend the meaning of dependent origination of virtues, and so on. Like a spoon tasting the flavor of soup. This means that a cook repeatedly stirs and agitates the soup with a spoon or ladle, and although the spoon is mostly in the soup, it does not perceive the flavor in terms of sweetness or sourness. Similarly, even if a child attends upon a holy person for a long time, they will not understand the Dharma. One with wisdom, for a moment. This means that for those who have special wisdom, the time is very short, or equivalent to two hours. Even by closely attending to the wise. This means that they will understand the Dharma as it is taught by the wise. Like the tongue tasting the flavor of soup. This means that, for example, if the function of the tongue is not impaired, it will understand the flavor of the soup just by touching it. A child will not understand the Dharma even if they serve a holy person for as long as they live. Why? Because they have no wisdom. Wisdom is the mind that understands, and a child does not have this wisdom. It is like a blind person not seeing forms and so on. This shows the mastery of worldly wisdom, such as mindfulness and recollection. Having wisdom means being able to understand quickly. Wisdom is what the wise possess, such as the giving of food to the unprotected. Because there are no eyes. This means that it is like an eye, because the eye directly sees objects, so this refers to uncontaminated wisdom. A child does not understand the Dharma of practice, and not only that, but to show that they also do not understand the world and the world beyond as revealed by the teachings, it is said: Taught by the perfectly enlightened Buddha. This refers to the Dharma taught by the Buddha. One with wisdom can understand what is taught by others.

Not only that, but also completely understands everything spoken by the perfectly enlightened Buddha. Because it is to show that a wise person can accomplish all that should and should not be done with just one word, while a child cannot, it is shown that relying on the capacity, just one teaching can accomplish meaning and lose meaning. Thus, "meaningful words" and so on are spoken. Monks, just as the rain falling from the sky, when it encounters salty land, barren land, and flat and soft land, it will become the merit of each. Similarly, hearing the Dharma spoken by the Tathagata or the Tathagata's Shravakas, for those who believe in the inferior, it will be understood as shallow in meaning, while for those who believe in the vast, it will be understood as profound, therefore this sutra's words are spoken. The word "also" in "with just one word" is separated from the second situation, meaning, why bother to say many words? Or, "word" refers to a quarter of a four-line verse. It has also been said, "Do not do all evils," this one line of words can show the meaning, and this meaning does not depend on others, which means completely understanding the meaning of the word. "All dharmas that are" and so on, refers to all the verses, or just one line of words can understand the Four Noble Truths. "Meaningful" refers to being related to the meaning that produces the fruit of special intention. One should rely on the meaning, not the error of words, and should understand from the sutras themselves. "The wise can do things" refers to the wise can produce the actions of attendants and so on, in order to be able to manifest accomplishment. "Children cannot do things" refers to the foolish, for Chandrakirti and others, it will cause harm, because it is the cause of creating sin. "The words of all Buddhas" refers to all the Buddhas, like the Tathagatas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, whether in the undifferentiated way, the undifferentiated letters, or the meaning of the words, they are all the same, but due to the difference of the listeners, meaningful and meaningless results will occur.
