Now that you have been tamed, alas, if you also cultivate the antidote in the same way, then you will become very tamed before long. It is necessary to tame oneself. Why? Because taming oneself leads to wisdom. It is said that wisdom is taming oneself; if it is not, then wisdom is meaningless. If one must also benefit many others and also benefit oneself, then what should a wise person strive for first? It is said: For the sake of one's own benefit, do the benefit of others. And so on. In Shravasti, a certain monk heard a few words of Dharma from somewhere, entered the city, and preached them to Brahmins and householders very little, doing nothing else. In response to this situation, these words were spoken. Abandoning the benefit of others and doing one's own benefit, for this purpose, the characteristics of taming the senses, etc., are beneficial, and should not be abandoned or discarded, that is the meaning. What is it? The benefit of others is that even though there are countless needs of others. Then, the Blessed One cherishes the benefit of others most highly. If he abandons his own benefit, then how is this explained? It is shown by "If one deeply understands one's own benefit," one should know that one's own benefit is more important than everything, because it is a prerequisite, so everything must be done for the benefit of others. If one has not completely tamed oneself, one cannot do the benefit of others, just as one has not seen the road and shows the way to others. Now it is shown that for the benefit of sentient beings, it will be done later, and it becomes the excellence of one's own benefit. One's own benefit is the benefit of others, that is the meaning, because if one's own benefit is accomplished, then the benefit of others will naturally be accomplished afterwards. The holy ones taming themselves is their own refuge, like an island for those carried away by water, to show this. Myself, mine, etc., there are fourteen verses. When the Blessed One went to the monastery, the sick monk was not cared for by anyone, had no food for seven days, and also

He saw someone sinking inside. That person had a very angry nature, openly spoke harsh words, and disrespected those who behaved like Brahma. Therefore, the monks went to that abandoned person and said: Monk, don't you serve the Khenpo (preceptor)? Don't you study and serve with your fellow students? Furthermore, starting from "same Khenpo (preceptor)", until "don't you have?" he was asked. He replied: I have no protector. Therefore, these words were spoken. Oneself, that one's own mind being tamed is necessary. Not being tamed is not reasonable, and for the sake of proving this, the word "nyid kyi" is used. "I am my own protector" means that oneself is one's own thing, the nature of the five aggregates is the meaning of reliance, need, and protection. Because by taming one mind, all the sense faculties will be guarded. Who else can become a protector? It means, what else is there other than taming the mind? How can the inner Pudgala (person) who is completely examined by heretics etc. be said to be a protector? Because it contradicts reason and scripture. Furthermore, who among your Khenpo (preceptor) etc. can become a protector? In order to show that the world acts according to its own karma. Taming oneself is the protector, why should this be determined in this way? Because from seeing its result, just as from smoke one determines fire. It was said, to be able to obtain is to be able to find. The wise person strives to tame himself with wisdom. The meaning of things is wealth such as property, it is the meaning of living supplies that nourish oneself. It can be obtained by one method, that is the meaning. It was said, "I am my own protector", taming the mind is the guide. If one cannot even accumulate one's own belongings, then who else can change? Oneself is oneself, it is the continuum of sentient beings. Therefore, that patient had such a thought: I (བདག་,ātman,ātman,I) am now weakened and have become like this.
