The hearing I speak of is unnecessary, for example, in the house of the Brahmin Kausika, the Brahmin Bharadvaja came as a guest, and merely reading from the book of Dependent Arising did not constitute special hearing. This can be given as an example. In "hearing and," the word "and" means essence. "Knowing and" means guiding. What comes from others is hearing, therefore understanding its meaning is the very essence. What was said before is not complete, one should realize the well-spoken oneself, if one cannot realize it. Or if one hears from others, then it should be regarded as meaningless, like the sound of a crow. "Even if meditation etc. are known as essence" means, having special wisdom, worldly wisdom becoming a collection of noble paths, and the meaning of transcending the world. "Meditation etc." refers to being single-minded in virtue, etc. Whatever is essence and fruit, that is itself. What is that? Not hearing from others, and hearing this, both of these should be combined here. For example, seeing the well-spoken oneself, or from others. How does one realize the meaning of the well-spoken oneself? Or realizing the meaning by hearing from others, because special wisdom such as wisdom arising from hearing is born, then vipassana also fully obtains the fruit of realizing the meaning of the well-spoken, otherwise it is not. To illustrate this, it says: "Whoever is negligent and rude, his hearing and knowledge will not become great meaning." It means that whoever is rude is foolish and rash, without definite examination, without examining what should be done and what should not be done. Negligence refers to being lax in practicing meditation. Those are, in order, becoming special wisdom, and the special aspects of meditation are incomplete, that is, one has not fully understood the well-spoken oneself, or is impatient, so one cannot make good use of the benefits. If that is accomplished, then the desired fruit mentioned earlier will be accomplished. To rely on the white side, it is said: Whoever is taught by the noble ones...

Etc. Dharma refers to the Dharma of the scriptures, meaning well-spoken. Who expounded it? It is what the noble ones expounded. The noble ones are those who are free from desire in the three realms, abandoning and transcending the place of birth. That is, the meaning of what the Buddhas and the Buddha's Shravaka disciples expounded and taught. What beings rejoice in means that merely rejoicing in the nature of Dharma does not constitute good conduct. To illustrate this point, the word "thus" is used. Obtaining joy refers to the characteristic of joy, which is faith. Therefore, through faith, one will develop joy in the Dharma, and through the Dharma, one will also develop faith. That is, if listening to the Dharma is complete, then faith will also be complete. This is what the sutras say. The sign of faith is the phrase "joy in listening to the holy Dharma." After that, the action of speech refers to entering into it through reading, reciting, teaching, and explaining, etc. Body refers to the actions done by it and conforming, which is conforming to the Dharma. These two indicate the restraint of discipline. Those who are patient, enjoy association, and restrain the senses. It refers to relying on what is heard and believed, entering into the restraint of discipline, thereby enduring suffering without taking it to heart, or in a way that determines the parts. Enjoying association refers to the mind of few desires and contentment, which is the nature of the path of seeing. Restraining the senses refers to abiding in meditation and subduing the senses such as the eyes. Having transformed in this way, hearing refers to listening well, and knowing refers to understanding the meaning. Obtaining the other shore refers to reaching the ultimate other shore and obtaining Nirvana, just like the Buddhas and the Buddha's Shravaka disciples. The explanation of the twenty-second chapter on hearing is complete. To illustrate that the true fruit of hearing is taming oneself, the chapter on self is taught after that, which is well-spoken and should be learned, etc.

The son of good lineage, endowed with a good nature, is one who relies on virtuous friends and gathers many monks. He listens very well to the Dharma they speak, such as the Sutra Pitaka and the Udanavarga. Alone at home, he contemplates and meditates, and in that way, he obtains a tamed mind, and together with the mind, the mind becomes pacified. Therefore, two verses were spoken. What is spoken for one's own benefit is well-spoken. One should learn the well-spoken, meaning one should listen. Or, in connection with the well-spoken, with the knowledge of existence and non-existence, following the Dharma, one should learn, rely on, and follow. The well-spoken is mostly heard from the Sugata and the sons of the Sugata, therefore, to indicate that point, it is said: "Serve and honor the renunciates." This is to indicate the virtuous friend. Or, relying on the noble person, one should be related to it and learn, to learn completely with respect, to accumulate merit for the sake of giving alms and so on, and to respect virtues. The previous verse indicated the accumulation of wisdom, and this indicates the accumulation of merit. To indicate its fruit, it is said: "Seclusion and solitary seat." It means, in a state of solitude, to learn in connection with solitary places and so on. For example, because there is no distraction, subtle proliferation is prevented. This indicates the seclusion of body and mind. The mind becomes pacified. It means, having abandoned the disturbing afflictions of the three realms, the manifestation of the mind is pacified, therefore, it is free from all distractions and agitation. If, in connection with this, one does the benefit of others, then the trainees will be completely liberated from suffering. Listening to the true Dharma and relying on the noble person, proper attention, following the Dharma, are indicated here in sequence. Or, the first half indicates the sound of others. Word.
