Furthermore, when seeing anger that causes suffering to oneself and others, if one abides in patience and does not become angry, then that anger will also disappear. The term "victorious in battle" refers to universally pacifying disputes or prolonging the universal disputes of misconduct. What is battle like? It is said to be "difficult to overcome," meaning difficult to suppress and difficult to endure, which is the meaning of being extremely great. One should speak of how Bodhisattvas rely on loving-kindness to suppress the power of demons and so forth. In order to show the method of abandoning anger and so forth, it is said, "Overcome anger with non-anger," and so forth. A Brahmin named Asurayana scolded the Blessed One with words that would not allow him into the Sangha, therefore these words were spoken. Others say that the Blessed One, together with the assembly of Shravakas, having been offered a meal in the house of a female lay devotee named Udara, spoke these words, beginning with the female lay devotee Udara. "Overcome anger with non-anger" means to cut off anger that has already arisen and to prevent anger that has not arisen from arising, which is the meaning of suppressing it with non-anger. "Overcome the non-virtuous with virtue" means that the fool who harms others in various ways is non-virtuous here, and one should suppress him with virtuous and beneficial actions and wisdom, which is its meaning. "Overcome stinginess with generosity" means that for the miserly and extremely stingy, one should cut off stinginess by giving away a large amount of wealth. "Overcome untruth with truth" means that which lacks truth and honesty and exists here is falsehood, which means speaking untruthful words, and one should overcome it with non-inverted words. Since that Brahmin has extremely great faults such as anger, how can one with faults overcome faultless words and so forth? As it is said: If one cannot bear the virtues of others, one should strive for one's own virtues and so forth; merely slandering the fame of others cannot destroy them; if one indulges in hatred, cherishes it in one's heart, and does not abandon it, then with the umbrella of the palm

Unable to protect, it only increases fatigue. As it is said. In order to show the benefits of abandoning anger, it is said, "Subdued and with reason," and so on. To the Blessed One, a Brahmin boy named Berga spoke words of non-assembly and rebuked him. Brahmin boy, when the star of your birth is near, send the food of birth to your relatives, after such instruction. O Gautama, I will send it, he said. Brahmin boy, if your relatives do not accept it, then to whom will it belong? To oneself. Likewise, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, even if one speaks sinful words of non-assembly to him, the Tathagata does not accept them. Ascetic Gautama, I have heard from the old Brahmins that the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, even if he is rebuked with sinful words of non-assembly before you, will not be angry. This is Gautama, you are confused, after such a report. To this, the Blessed One spoke three verses. How can one without anger be angry? It is said that anger, together with its predispositions, has been abandoned, so how can the pervasive entanglement of anger arise? This is to show this. One who has anger is angry. Not having anger is not having anger, but being without anger and abandoning anger, because one has obtained the cessation of not examining anger and so on separately. If a black snake exists or does not rise up, how can it be seized by it? Likewise, if there is no anger, how can it manifest? In what order is it explained that abandoning anger can be understood? For this, it is said, "Subdued and," the six senses are subdued, because when the six senses are subdued, one relies on patience, anger ceases, this shows the restraint of the senses. That is to show the discipline of morality, it is said, "Living with reason," and so on, living with equanimity is living with reason, that is having a true livelihood, therefore this shows the discipline of morality purely, with wrong livelihood it is completely
