In order to teach that one should benefit and abide according to how the object of taming is, and at another time, one should attain the very nature of nirvana without remainder of aggregates. Therefore, it is said that nirvana itself. To transcend the obscurations of birth is nirvana, and that itself is the characteristic of being separated from all suffering. "Abiding within" means the center, meaning abiding in the nature of that. "That" refers to taming. The characteristics of the thoughts of those to be tamed are many kinds. Among those to be tamed gathered there, some seek peace, some seek separation from suffering, some seek to abandon transmigration, some seek liberation from bondage, and so forth. Because they are afflicted by non-pacification and so forth, they desire the distinctions of pacification and so forth. Therefore, out of compassion for them, this was spoken. In order to teach that reaching the end of suffering depends on taming oneself, it is said, "Taming" and so forth. A naked ascetic asked a monk, "How does one go to the other shore of all suffering?" And so this was spoken. "One's own self alone should be tamed," which means to control one's own mind, actions, and speech. "Taming like a good horse," which means, for example, like a tamer tames a good breed of horse. Why? In order to show the benefit. "By one's own self being well-tamed, one goes to the far shore of all sufferings," which means going to the end of suffering, that is, becoming liberated. In order to show the benefit of taming oneself, "One's own self alone" and so forth was spoken. In the country of Beratya, an old merchant was despised by his sons and others, and asked, "Who is my protector?" Starting from this, it was taught that one should abide in one's own protector and one's own refuge, and that others are not islands or refuges, and so this was spoken. "One's own self alone" refers to the mind alone. "Mine" refers to all my possessions, because for my possessions, one should tame one's own mind.

It is said that the guide controls this mind and leads it to other worlds. Leading is the meaning of this. Because after taming, one can lead oneself to the happy realms. This enables one to understand the cause of obtaining excellence. Oneself is one's own protector. This is the meaning of protection and safeguarding. Taming one's own mind is one's own protector. By its power, all evil deeds can be destroyed. Or, the guide can bring about manifest happiness. The protector ensures the attainment of excellent happiness. Therefore, for this reason, the metaphors such as taming oneself are easy to understand. The commentary on the Nineteenth Chapter, "The Categories of Horses," is complete. If one tames one's own mind, one can eliminate anger and other afflictions. For example, if one rubs a cat's bladder well, it will make a crackling sound. Similarly, for the sake of practice, the chapter on anger is shown after that. Because without taming, one cannot eliminate anger and other afflictions. Therefore, after showing this, it is said to tame oneself, abandon anger, and so on. A naked ascetic who delights in non-attachment asked the Blessed One: By what is abandoned, and by what can be completely abandoned? By what can one transcend all? What must be done to be without attachment? And not fall into the footsteps of desire? Therefore, the Blessed One spoke these words. Others say that this was spoken with the royal maiden named Snarma in the Nyagrodha Grove's Auspicious Garden as the occasion. Anger is the extreme agitation of the mind, preceded by anger, arising from harming or benefiting one's friends and enemies. Others say that it is abandoning reason that is inconsistent with what is and is not the case, and even towards sons and the like, the mind is extremely agitated, and this is anger. Others say that here, it is simply because of the world's common name for anger that it is called anger. Abandoning means completely abandoning anger, because it has become the cause of harming others. I
