The nature of having attachment, and not properly applying the mind. These are explained by words such as these. Feeling should be understood as the root of the first. Uprooting means cutting off from the root. Attachment is like this: in the desire realm, it is the attachment to sexual intercourse. In the form realm, it is the attachment to meditative absorption. In the formless realm, it is the attachment to attainment. These three are indicated by the term "Sogmig." A true Brahmin is like that, I say. Subduing the mind in other ways, it is said, "With diligence as the river," and so on. When about five hundred carts were resting in a wilderness monastery, they were all carried away by the flood, all the goods were carried away, and the people barely saved their lives with difficulty, falling into distress, they reported, "Venerable, this river is small, but there are four great rivers." Thus they reported, and these words were spoken. "Cutting the stream" means crossing the four rivers, that is, completely abandoning the household life. To show that cutting the stream depends on initiating diligence, therefore, it is said, "With diligence." "Completely destroying all desires" refers to the attachment to desire and the afflictive attachment, relying on the solitude of body and mind or impurity, etc., cutting off the afflictions of acting in desire. With the noble path, one can eradicate the root. "Knowing the exhaustion of all formations," refers to the manifest abandonment of acting in the form and formless realms. "Having become free from attachment and not harming the interests of others," this is to explain "What is without sin." Being free from the causes of harm such as attachment and not acting, it is certain to be without sin, this is the definitive word for this. "Father and mother," etc., the meaning including the cause and result has already been explained in the community of monks. "Tiger" refers to sentient beings who are entangled with remorse. For example, a tiger is fierce, violent, and unhesitatingly consumes flesh and blood. Similarly, one who is possessed by the entanglement of malice is also vicious and devours all roots of virtue. The fifth is the four types of father, etc.

It is taught that this is the fifth. Or because it is the fifth of the five obscurations. To show that such a person should be offered and revered. The Brahmin, etc., are mentioned. In Rajagriha, there was a Brahmin who had shaved his hair and beard, and before long he became an Arhat, and he entered the city for alms. A Brahmin of the Brahmin caste, who had an old feud with a large Sal tree (Shorea robusta) and had been harboring resentment, struck him on the head with his palm. He said, "Before, you looked like other Brahmins, but now you look like someone else." Having said that, he angrily struck him again. He said, "I had no fault before, but now I have a fault. Having been struck like this, why didn't I just leave without saying a word?" That person then developed faith and began with that. "Do not strike Brahmins." It means that, according to what has been said, do not strike a Brahmin Arhat, who is worthy of offering, with hands or sticks, etc. It is not even appropriate to think of harming him in one's mind, let alone striking him. Because striking is the cause of the increase of evil deeds. "Do not expel Brahmins." It means that whenever something is obtained, it should not be abandoned without offering it. It means that he should not be abandoned without offering him robes and food, etc. As it is said, to show that not doing so is slander. Striking a Brahmin is foolish, meaning that striking a virtuous person is approaching the fruit of being slandered. Foolish means slander. As it is said: Whoever strikes a holy person, that evil person, will be deeply slandered by the holy ones. Because it is associated with unforgivable sins, that person will also fall into the lower realms. The one who expels him is evil, meaning that whoever abandons him without relying on him and performing various kinds of reverence, that is because he has completely exhausted his special merit. To show that one who does not respect the guru and delights in good deeds is not engaging in slander. Who...
