Or, whatever is without the other shore, that is, the five aggregates without remainder. This shore refers to things accompanied by afflictions, and so on, it should be said. If asked, how is it that there is no other shore and non-other shore, etc.? Here the cause is shown. It is mentioned "three places," these three refer to the birthplaces of the nature of inner, outer, and both. Or, it refers to the three places of sentient beings, that is, the three realms. Or, it refers to the three times. The term "unattached" means without particular attachment, because attachment to it has been abandoned. The sutra says, "If the attachment to what is seen by the eye is abandoned, then attachment is abandoned, and the eye will also be abandoned." Therefore, it should be said that there is no other shore, etc. The term "unattached" indicates that craving has been abandoned, and it shows that abandoning the taking of its fruit. It mentions "whatever is long and short," and so on. Then, two Brahmins who lived in the Dandaka monastery, possessing long and short asceticism, wearing long and short clothes, with retinues, thinking themselves to be Brahmins, went before the Blessed One and asked, "Gautama, how do you designate a Brahmin?" Therefore, four verses were spoken to them. The two of them abandoned short and long clothes, and also abandoned fine and coarse and beautiful, etc., and then went forth, becoming without desire. The term "short" refers to the two of them abandoning their former clothes, etc., and after realizing it from the Blessed One, they completely abandoned it, and later realized the ultimate meaning of the verses. Whatever is, is whatever itself. The term "short" refers to not acquiring the accumulation of good and non-good in a short time, it should be understood in this connection. The term "long" refers to accumulating over a long period of time. The term "fine and coarse" refers to fine and coarse, that is, clear and unclear, according to the order of what is done by body and mind. Or, it refers to the ground of meditative equipoise and non-meditative equipoise. Or, it refers to what is beyond the senses and what has become the object grasped by the senses. The world refers to the goer. Good and non-good refer to merit and non-merit, or afflictions and afflictions.

It is not like that. Then, should merit be accepted? The answer is: slightly, meaning without desire. Merit, too, should be abandoned like sin, so it is said. Not accepting means neither accepting nor clinging. It is because of craving that one becomes close to accepting, but for one without craving, that (acceptance) does not exist either. Abandoning close acceptance makes one special. This very thing refers to the Dharma that is seen. "Whoever" refers to abandoning close acceptance. "Fully knowing" refers to manifest realization through uncontaminated wisdom. "The exhaustion of one's own suffering" refers to abandoning the suffering that exists in one's own continuum. Alternatively, it is completely severed by the Four Noble Truths. What will it become like after suffering is exhausted? The answer is: dispassion, which refers to abandoning the craving of the three realms. "Not endowed" means abandoning the root of afflictions. Through what does one attain dispassion and eliminate defilements? This very thing is said. This very thing, etc., others say, begins with the venerable one who dwells in the Joyful Grove in the east, who is completely pure. "Virtue" refers to having the fruit of existence. "Sin" refers to having the fruit of bad destinies. "Both" refers to the virtue and sin mentioned before. "Not stained" refers to not being close, etc. Therefore, being stained by merit is like being a universal monarch, etc. Being closely stained by sin is like being a Candala, etc. Being stained by both is like being Ajatashatru, etc. "Unstained" means without defilement, with karma exhausted and defilements exhausted, which this indicates. "Dust-free" refers to explaining its benefit. "Peaceful" is for the sake of attaining close peace. Being closely stained by merit, etc., one will become attached to it, and abandoning it, one will also be free from the bondage it has created, which shows that whatever is virtuous, etc., has been said. For what is clung to, generate an antidote that is in accordance with close abandonment, etc., thereby transcending and overcoming that excessive clinging. Craving.
