As it is said: A thousand horse-slaying sacrifices, and the truth are the same way. Because of a thousand horse slayings, the truth itself is particularly superior. The nature of non-harm is Dharma, sacrifice is killing living beings. Therefore, seeking the meaning of Dharma, one should have compassion for living beings. All Vedic sacrifices, and bathing in all the altars, all these should not be done, one should speak of great love for living beings. As it is said. Or, the truth is the realization of the four noble truths. The fruit of that Dharma is liberation, that itself is called purity, because it has abandoned the defilement of evil deeds, and is endowed with the three of doing good, that is, with the words of three kinds of bathing. Truth is purity, taming is purity, guarding the senses is purity, and loving all beings is purity, washing with water is the fifth. Even if one washes away external dirt, and can quench thirst, but it is impossible to abandon internal dirt with water. Being arrogant and intoxicated by the desire for desire, and being dominated by women, even if one bathes a hundred times on the altar, one cannot become pure because of it. One is called a Brahmin because one has abandoned sins. To this, let us reason for a moment, how can one become pure? Starting with not with matted hair, etc. The so-called abandoner, that is, by what one acts outwardly and abandons. Sin is evil deeds. Size is coarse and fine. All are in the manner of what should be abandoned by seeing, etc. Because sins are abandoned, as it is said, that is, completely abandoned, as it is said, establishing a Shramana and a Brahmin by the reason of their own nature, not establishing them by the difference of caste, as it is shown, starting with shaving the head, etc. Some people shave their hair and beard, and let everyone know that they are Shramanas, some people recite the Vedas, and let people know that they are Brahmins, the Southern Path appeared before the Blessed One, and he spoke these by mastering these two. Merely shaving the head, that is, merely the limb of the body, the head being shaved, can become a Shramana.

It is not a Brahmin, because there are also householders who do not practice desire and sorrow, etc. The word Om, merely combining and reciting phrases such as Om Bhur Bhuva Swaha (藏文:ཨོཾ་བྷུར་བྷུ་བཿ་སྭཿ,梵文天城体:,梵文罗马拟音:,汉语字面意思:), does not make one a Brahmin, because Shariputra and others also recite these. If that is the case, then what is the cause of being designated as a Brahmin and a renunciate? It is mentioned as "whoever" etc. Renunciation refers to contemplating the truth, and one who possesses this is worthy of being designated as a renunciate. One who possesses the Dharma of non-harming nature is called a Brahmin. The names of both are due to the causes of both. It has been said, "whoever" etc. Because it is shown that only by abandoning sins and accumulating merits does one become a Brahmin, and not by bathing on steps etc. It is mentioned as "most people" etc. The Blessed One was residing at the stupa on the top of Gaya Mountain, and at that time in Gaya, during the festival of the first month of spring, hundreds of thousands of beings bathed in order to eliminate sins, so others say that this is what he said. Water cannot change, meaning that water cannot purify defilements and eliminate sins. Why? Because it is said that most people bathe here, referring to the face etc. Those are impure, because those who bathe there appear without distinction. If the water of the steps could eliminate sins, then it would also eliminate merits, and eliminating sins would also deprive one of its fruits, like the remnants of a tree cut off from the root etc. Therefore, logically, sins will not be purified, because bathing etc. does not stop its root. If that is the case, then what will purify it? By cultivating a special path, one will abandon sins, just as darkness is dispelled by a lamp, one will become pure, and to show this, it is said, "whoever" etc. The word "also" shows that only this way can change, and not other ways. The remaining meaning is what has been said. So, what are the ultimate renunciates etc.? "Whoever is the Dharma of sin" etc.
