In the solitary ascetic places of the snowy mountains, there were many ascetics diligently practicing asceticism. Some were naked, some had matted hair, and some were shaved. When they heard the gods in the sky talking about the Buddha's appearance, their hearts were filled with joy, and they went to Varanasi to see the Blessed One, who then spoke six verses based on that. The so-called "naked practice" is related to "purifying sins." Naked practice is the practice of not wearing clothes. They believe that by removing the covering of the body, they can also remove the covering of the mind, thereby promoting the teachings of heretics, so some people aim for nakedness. But the Blessed One forbade this behavior, because it is shameless and should be condemned. Because if a person does not have clothes to cover and cover the body, then his heart does not have clothes of shame, so shamelessness is like livestock. The so-called "not because of the bun" does not refer to the messy hair, but refers to the hair growing to the feet and keeping it long like a snake. If you accumulate hair excessively, you will get sick. Keeping long hair does not lead to a state of desirelessness, nor does it lead to enlightenment. The so-called "not because of shaving" does not refer to shaving the hair and beard, or pulling out the hair and beard. Even if the external thickness is removed, it is impossible to remove the internal thickness of greed, etc., because removing the external is contrary to removing the internal. The so-called "not because of not eating food" does not mean not enjoying all kinds of food. For example, enjoying food and drink can eliminate hunger and thirst, and similarly, eliminating subtle afflictions is also the opposite. Or, a little is food, and a little food is like a little yellow. The so-called "not eating food" means not enjoying food and drink at all. If even shadows and sunlight are avoided, what else needs to be said? The so-called "sleeping on the ground" refers to the mind or previous actions.

Or sleeping on dry, empty ground visible to the eyes. Or sleeping on the bare ground without a mat. The word "or" here doesn't mean an alternative, but rather something straightforward. Staying on a bad mattress won't cause subtle bodies to grow, it is said. Not with dust and dirt, dust is the powder of ashes. Dirt is the mud of the body associated with dust and so on. There are two kinds of dirt, the pacification of dirt is the body's dirt being drawn by the mind. Drawing the body's dirt is also like the high and low of a scale. Striving to sit squatting. "Sitting squatting" refers to the state of squatting, which is excellently abiding in the squatting state. Just as I sit on the ground, so too are attachment and so on in the continuum of the noble ones, through realizing this. Or, striving is diligence, being able to endure the state of squatting. One will not become pure, meaning that one will not become pure through practicing nakedness and so on, nor will one be cleansed by any defilements of sin and so on. What will not become pure? It is said "child," meaning an ordinary being. The characteristic of a child is: one cannot transcend doubts. This is because the path of seeing has not arisen, so doubts have not been abandoned. Therefore, merely because doubts have not been abandoned, it shows that an ordinary being has not attained the Dharma of the noble ones. In this way, having spoken of the faults of not having knowledge of suchness, having spoken of "those" and so on, refers to the practice of nakedness and so on that was just mentioned. The word "self" means completely abandoning seeing no-self and so on. Attachment means clinging, and thinking that this itself is purifying sins, is the meaning of manifestly clinging due to ignorance. Whatever it may be, refers to some people, because they do not have such correct views. Shramana and Brahmin, refers to abandoning conventional truth and ultimate truth, and completely grasping in accordance with them. Superior conduct is Shramana. Others say that completely grasping is Brahmin. The result of clinging to wrong views has been spoken. Bardo, refers to samsara.
