The land shows contentment with just a humble dwelling. The remainder shows delight in renunciation. The explanation of the section on monks, the thirty-two characteristics, is complete. After this, there is no other section, so the section on Brahmins is established. Or, to show that the true monk is none other than a Brahmin, the section on Brahmins is shown after this, saying "Whatever is adorned," and so on. When the son of a high-ranking family, named Yasha, surrounded by consorts, at night, the thought of a charnel ground arose, and he said, "I am tormented," and so on, and then he came out of his house, crossed the playful bank of the river called Komitra, and by listening to the Dharma from the Bhagavan, he attained the fruit of an Arhat, and seeing the splendor of his householder's attire, he became ashamed. This is where it started. "Whatever" means whoever attains distinction without relying on caste and lineage, etc. "Adorned" means associated with ornaments, i.e., associated with various householder's adornments. The word "also" means possibility, that even so, practicing the sacred Dharma is possible. "Practicing Dharma" means doing good. If you ask what kind of sentient being can practice Dharma in what way, then it is said "Subdued," and so on. Having the ability to subdue the senses is to be subdued. "Peaceful" means that the blazing flames of discrimination are calmed. "Truly restrained" means having excellent discipline. "Pure conduct" means relying on wisdom, because practicing wisdom is pure, i.e., attaining liberation. Therefore, the first three show the accumulation of merit, and this shows the accumulation of wisdom. By doing so, the practice of Dharma becomes complete, otherwise it is not. "To all beings" means to those sentient beings without enemies, friends, or neutral parties. Or it refers to sentient beings with or without life. "Not killing" means abandoning or forsaking. "Harm" means injury and its instruments. By first abandoning harm to others, one accumulates the accumulations of merit and wisdom, which is shown through this. Or, in the freedom of tranquility and samadhi

Because it has been done, it is in accordance with this, which is the meaning here. Or, like seeking a harmless place, going before the Blessed One. Therefore, it is also taught that what arises from this Dharma, desiring liberation, is the root of all good, and not others. With the order of taming, etc., it is shown to have the senses, discipline, and mind properly restrained. Pure conduct is the union of the path, and with words such as "all," abandoning the attire of householders, abandoning all actions that harm others, it is thus approximated. Or, this Dharma itself refers to the practice of virtuous Dharma. That is, increasing one's own merits and increasing the merits of others, making them grow. Among them, taming, etc., increase one's own merits, and by cultivating the four, after realizing them, relying on the cultivation of desire, guarding the gates of the senses, one obtains peace. Cultivating discipline, because there is no fault, the actions of body, speech, and mind obtain peace. Cultivating the mind, blocking the flow of afflictions, thereby completely restraining. Cultivating wisdom, after fully realizing it, uniting with the noble path. With pure conduct, one increases the merits of others. The words "from all arising" also show this, because there is no cultivation of the four, such as desire, therefore there is completely no harm. The so-called Brahmin is because he has abandoned sins. It is also said: Merits, etc., are done, the mind of desire does not retreat, superior among Brahmins, abiding in the path, is called a Brahmin. Thus. The so-called Shramana is because sins are pacified or has the virtues of a Shramana. The so-called Bhikshu is because he has destroyed afflictions or has the vows of individual liberation. What is done by merit is the Brahmin, etc., and not what is done by marks such as lineage, thus it is shown. With three verses, the characteristics of the Brahmin, etc., are shown in order. Then, are naked practices, etc., also called Brahmins, etc., in the world? If asked in this way, in order to refute this point, it is said, "Not by naked practice," etc.
