Thus he requested. The Blessed One spoke much and extensively, but desiring to hear the condensed meaning, he requested the Blessed One to condense it well and show it to me. Having requested thus, he spoke this meaning. What is the taming of the senses is the meaning of guarding the senses. If one is content, then the senses will be subdued, therefore contentment is spoken of. Because one is content with coarse Dharma garments and the like. If one possesses these two, then it shows that one is a vessel for superior qualities, which is called individual liberation. This is the meaning of cultivating for the sake of liberation, because Nirvana is the ultimate. Showing that excellent qualities and discipline are beautiful, such as "the measure of this food" and so on. Here, the measure of a mouthful of food depends on the strength of the fire, because it corresponds to it. And it is said such as "only to sustain the body, to quench hunger and thirst" and so on. "Frontier" means dwelling in a solitary place. After showing the limbs of the path, he spoke of the superior practice of the path. Superior mind means striving diligently in the cultivation of the four formless concentrations free from outflows. This, meaning only this is in accordance with the teachings of the Buddha, the Blessed One. Whoever is endowed with practice, it shows that he follows the Buddha's teachings, therefore he spoke of "whose body" and so on. In Rajagriha (Royal City), there was a wandering ascetic named "endowed with a bed and a superior bed," who lived on the bank of the Magadha Good Pool, catching and eating fish with spit at night, and sitting on the bed in the morning, therefore he spoke this verse. Having become a monk, one should live by the Dharma, one should not harm any living being, and one's mind should be peaceful by practicing renunciation. Thinking thus, this discipline is in accordance with a peaceful and subdued mind, knowing that the time for their taming has come, he spoke thus. If you practice this verse in this way, then you will also be like that. You who think of yourself as superior, but you are not such a monk. Thus he declared.

Regarding "whose body" etc., who is the person? The body refers to the absence of sins arising from misconduct of the body etc. After showing the precepts of cessation, the precepts of entering are shown. "He is virtuous in morality," meaning that he himself has a completely pure nature. "The ashamed one" refers to the one who has a sense of shame in his mind, and abides in the mind of shame. Because he has this mind, he is without sin and possesses virtues, so the ashamed one is only a Bhikshu, not others. In order to show that such a person can attain the Noble Path, it is said "who" etc. If it is said, "The venerable one who abides is a Bhikshu," then how does the Bhikshu abide? To this, the Bhikshu should cultivate the seven branches of enlightenment etc., and this is extensively explained. "Well cultivated" means to rely on well. Who is the Bhikshu? Dharma is virtue, that is, it speaks of "the seven dharmas of perfect enlightenment," perfect enlightenment refers to the characteristic of wisdom that is exhausted and not born. Whatever is in accordance with the aspects and following of what, that is it. The aspect of perfect enlightenment is the meaning of obtaining wisdom that is exhausted and not born. In order to show that it can be directly obtained, it is said "seven," that is, mindfulness, perfect enlightenment, and discrimination of dharmas etc. "That" refers to that sentient being itself. How is it? That is, having good dharmas, it is a distinction without defilement, because it is cultivated with uncontaminated knowledge. "Is" means that the Buddha declared it in the Samadhi arising from the Bhikshu's abiding. That is good wisdom. It is shown by the words "without concentration there is no wisdom," so "this is" etc. is said. The ascetic named Shingkhana, together with the one who is completely restrained, dwells in a secluded place, thinking that he is an uncontaminated Bhikshu, Gautama, in what way does he abide in the uncontaminated Bhikshu, by imputation he imputes

Now begins the explanation. Here, "this" refers to the nature of visible phenomena. "Wisdom" means completely cutting off with special wisdom. What is it? It refers to suffering, etc. Whichever continuum has self-grasping, that is it, the nature of the suffering related to that self. This shows the truth of suffering and the truth of origin, because ultimately, these two are of the same essence. "Cessation" means that it is ceased by this, therefore it is cessation, or because of cessation, it is cessation. This shows the truth of the path and the truth of cessation, which is the nature of the four truths. Having shown the path of seeing and the path of meditation, the path of no more learning is shown. It is said, "The virtuous and wise one," because with virtuous and stainless wisdom, the defilements of the three realms are abandoned. "Spoken" means explained, spoken by the all-knowing Buddha. "Without outflows" means being separated from afflictions such as desire. Then, if one possesses qualities such as morality, is that also without outflows? It is not, because abiding in that also completely deteriorates, and for the sake of showing this, "exhaustion of outflows" etc. is mentioned. In the country of Kosala, a certain monk lived relying on a forest, content with only morality, and not striving further in order to attain what has not been attained. Then, a certain deity living in that very forest thought thus: Alas, it is not proper for this monk to be content with just this, I should urge him on. Then, that deity at that time spoke two verses spoken by the Buddhas of the past. Morality is abstaining from killing, etc. Asceticism is abstaining from untimely food, etc. Or, morality is abstaining from ordained transgressions. Asceticism is the distinction of qualities, namely samadhi. One should not trust that monk merely by morality and asceticism. Or, having much learning, means that he has heard much of the three pitakas such as the Vinaya, and has obtained merit, that is, how its meaning and words are.
