After the Blessed One passed away, the monks should completely guard their minds as if guarding the tip of a yak's tail, as was declared. One's own mind is one's own consciousness. To subsequently guard means to restrain and subdue it from all objects. Like the tip of a yak's tail, for example, a wild yak primarily guards the tip of its tail, and even if it dies, it guards it in the same way. This shows that the mind is restrained from all objects and shows that it is established in the distinction of objects. Having love for all beings. The so-called "having love for all beings" means entering into and obtaining love. Because one has the thought of not harming sentient beings. Their happiness will never diminish. The so-called "their happiness will never diminish" means that the happiness that corresponds to the world will not diminish. This shows that the mind is the companion of animals and the supreme sage. Why? Because it begins with the phrase "elephant," and so on. Abandoning the monks who fight in a wide place, when they ascended into the sky by means of magical powers, they saw in a forest a good elephant abandoning the fighting elephant herd, dwelling with great joy, and the Blessed One declared this. Why? Because it is the mind. The so-called "elephant" refers to the Tathagata, because he is a great self, as stated in the Sutra of the Great Belly. Also, because there is no harm, the Blessed One is an elephant, because he is free from all faults. What is its mind like? It is an elephant, because it has obtained great joy, and because it is without fault, it is shown as an elephant. The great elephant is the mind of the elephant. The so-called "with equality" means establishing similarities. If asked what kind of elephant it is, it is said to have "good teeth," meaning teeth like abysses, or teeth like pillars, because it is born into a praised lineage, hence the phrase "good teeth are an elephant." Also, the elephant with good teeth, and the elephant of the elephant, this is the heart of the Tathagata is similar. If asked how it is similar, this is the so-called elephant, which is the nature that has not completely deteriorated, and has completely deteriorated due to fighting, etc.

It means without and without sadness. Why? Because it says, "Therefore, alone he delights in the forest." Just as this one alone abandons the fighting and untamed elephants and manifestly rejoices in the extremely secluded forest, so too, I abandon those who are contentious and noisy and manifestly rejoice in the forest. If joy is shown immediately, how is it that one delights in the forest? It is explained that by meditating on loving-kindness and so forth. It is said with the qualities of this very one and with "Whose mind has no harm," and so forth. Monks, having practiced the meditation of loving-kindness and having universally relied on loving-kindness, one should desire to obtain many benefits. Compassion is also the same, and it is said up to five verses. The word 'la' (ལ་) means without harm and injury. The word 'who' (གང་གི་) is the great self, that is, the yogi. The word 'trust' (ཡིད་ཆེས་) is because the mind is full of joy. Because of joy and so forth, seeing the happiness of others, one becomes joyful and does not cause harm. "Love for all beings" means to have subsequent love for all beings, that is, to have compassion for someone. "Loving-kindness for all beings" means to think extremely of generating the happiness of others. Is it that first is loving-kindness, then compassion, and then joy? This is shown by relying on inversion. In order to benefit others and show connection, these immeasurables are shown here, not abandonment. Showing the benefit of this itself, it is said, "No hatred arises," hatred is holding onto hatred. And no anger arises towards it, it is the very absence of arising together with a person. Or this shows abandonment, therefore it is the four immeasurables. It shows which person likes the forest. "To all living beings" is said because of those to be tamed, thus saying that arising, life, and sentient beings are different names. Anger also refers to someone who accomplishes. Or apply the words arising and so forth to the side of enemies, ordinary people, and friends. Who to loving-kindness
