That which is called "cause" is for the sake of gain and respect. That which is called "not flattering" means not speaking to others without the supreme Dharma of humans. Why? For the sake of stability. Therefore, they are called "the stable ones." Why are they definitely stable? Therefore, the result of stability is explained. "Touched by happiness in this world," it is said. The happiness and suffering associated with towns or monasteries do not cause the noble, stable ones to become high or low, senile, or arrogant, meaning there is no joy or pride, nor sadness and dejection. The chapter on happiness, the explanation of the thirty verses, is complete. Happiness resides in the mind, not in the self and so on, to show this. Therefore, after that, the chapter on the mind is explained, saying "difficult to grasp" and so on. A renunciate who wanted to leave the monastery came before the Blessed One, and the Blessed One said: Bhikshu, you should not be dominated by the mind, but should properly tame the mind. Because the mind, having been tamed and guarded, leads to happiness. Having said this, the Blessed One said: Difficult to grasp and tame, this is light, that is, very subtle, so that even the noble Ananda and others find it difficult to understand, so it is heard. That which is called "light" is because it causes rapid change like a monkey. As it is said: Entering lightly like the mind, in desire, not even one Dharma is truly seen. And so on, meaning wavering. That which is called "going where one is happy" means acting as one pleases, without examination, that is, it exists here in the manner of going where one is happy, that is it itself. Or, by "difficult to grasp" it shows the mind acting in the formless realm, because the child dwelling there has no tamed mind. "Light" means acting in form, because it is abandoned in reliance on the happiness of pleasure. Where does one go to be happy? It means acting in desire, because it possesses objects such as form. Or, in order, the minds of the three lower realms, humans, and gods.

Should be added. Subduing the mind is good. This refers to entering the right path, returning from the wrong path, and thereby attaining tranquility, which is excellent. How is it known? Like this, subduing the mind brings happiness. This refers to the fact that only subduing the mind can generate all the happiness of the world and beyond. To show that because the mind is not subdued, there is no real joy in abandoning samsara, it is said "the basis of demons" and so on. On the bank of the Iravati River, the fish were caught and thrown on the sand pile, and the fish were very restless and swaying. In that direction, there lived a yogi monk, and his mind also became restless, and when he saw the fish, he rebuked his own mind. Because it is born from water, it is aquatic, that is, fish. For example, just like that. Throwing it on the ground refers to throwing it on the sandy ground scorched by the heat of summer. Why throw it there? Because "taken out of the river." This refers to being drawn out from the great group essence of the water realm by leeches and so on. Completely restless means completely shaking and jumping, which means gathering and scattering. My mind, refers to showing that my mind being completely restless is not allowed. "The basis of demons" refers to the root of all poverty, the demon of afflictions, and for me who has entered tranquility and subduing, such a mind is not allowed, just like completely grasping samsara. The demon itself is the basis of demons, just like the basis of a name. "Abandoning" refers to being restless for the sake of complete abandonment itself, not because of samsara and serving samsara. If it is shown in that way, it cannot be subdued, someone might say. There is nothing that a wise person cannot do, just as they can pacify poison, summon incarnations, and lightning strikes, and they can also subdue the elephants of the directions, and for the wise, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished. Therefore, in order to show that the method of collecting the mind well in various states can only be done by the wise, it is said "from the sun" and so on. On one side of the mountain top, there is a monk living in solitude.
