Moreover, because it is difficult to find, it is very difficult to abandon. To show that if one abandons the collection of afflictions such as craving, one becomes free, and not otherwise, it is said, "Among those who are attached," and so on. In Rajagriha, there was a blessed person named Bhadra, who at dawn three times intentionally forgot and then intentionally said, "I am happy." When the monks asked him, "Do you remember your former desires?" he spoke five verses, saying, "One should accept what the former Buddhas said." Happiness is the special characteristic of action, and the happiness of praise is the special characteristic of life. "Alas" is joy, it is grasping life, meaning that one speaks these words filled with joy. How is it? It is said, "In attachment, there is no attachment." "To joys" refers to the sevenfold distinction of objects. Among the joys of objects, I have no joy in them. Why? As it is said, "In attachment," whether in a solitary place, famine, etc., or in suffering such as hunger and thirst, the accumulation of food and drink is itself a place of happiness. Similarly, how can one not live happily when one dwells having destroyed the bonds of craving, even within them that have not been completely destroyed? Therefore, this shows that one is free from desire for the three realms. To abandon hatred, it is said, "Afflicted by disease," and so on. To be harmed by exhaustion is to be afflicted by disease, because harm causes exhaustion and suffering, therefore it is disease. Eliminating anger through the power of love and so on is called being without disease. To show that desire and hatred both usually harm others, it is said, "Among those who are violent," which refers to complete hostility, that is, harming others with words and especially with the body, so it is violence, that is, hostility and harm. The anger in the minds of ascetics especially destroys villagers and so on, so one must endure such anger.

To show the reading, the phrase "among people with grudges" was spoken. Having a grudge means having a grudge related to anger, that is, the one who has a grudge is like the one who has a stick. The king usually indulges in these four afflictions, so just this verse is enough to explain. To show that if one can completely abandon the afflictions without any remainder, one can have special happiness, so "Mithila etc." were said. The ruler of Mithila, the king, became an ascetic, detached from desire, and lived on a mountain. When Mithila was burned by a great fire, he saw it and spoke a verse spoken by the Buddha. "What to me" refers to oneself. "Because there is nothing" means that there is no object to which one is particularly attached in the desire realm, because all suffering arises in connection with it. Why? Because "like Mithila" shows that being detached from desire is because the particular attachment to it has been exhausted. To show that for the one who has nothing, he is the one who is without outflows, enjoying the taste of the nectar of meditative joy, and not others, so "What is nothing to me" etc. were said. To show that having done and accumulated the karma that will surely be experienced, similarly, the karma that exists in the continuum of the Tathagata will surely produce results. The Blessed One went to the Brahmin village of Salakayana for alms, but did not get food and returned. Mara asked, "How much did you get?" The Blessed One replied, "Do the wicked think that the Buddha is difficult to obtain? The Tathagata has accumulated a lot of merit, so he got it." Therefore, he entered (the village) again, and from "I will do as I get food" he spoke two verses. "The one who eats joy" means enjoying and eating joy itself, here it means enjoying the joy and happiness arising from samadhi. How is it? "The god of light" shows that the gods of the second dhyana have special joy. Without defilements

Then, from where does the Blessed One enjoy happiness? It is like this, it is said, "Not relying on bad gatherings," because there is no particular attachment to the things of samsara. In order to show that the happiness without defilement is harmless, it is said, "With taking as the condition," and so on. Killing the beautiful woman, or the monk going to the city, or going to the temple, in any case, those people saw it, and became people who asked, "What are your practitioners like?" So these were said. The city is a place where many people enter, a place with people. A temple refers to a place in the forest. Not being touched by pleasure and pain, where pleasure is satisfying, pain is oppressive, and touch is of various meanings. That which is produced by oneself and others means that what one has done through meditation has not been done, therefore the pleasure and pain done by others is not done through determination, because it is related to cause and condition. Production means the meaning of holding and possessing. Because it is said in connection with this condition, touching changes, which means oppressing. Meeting means encountering cold and so on, which means distraction. With taking as the condition means relying on the cause of taking, such as afflictions. Without taking means being free from faults such as afflictions, whatever is encountered and touched will not change, it means not changing. Who recognizes in what way that he has not regressed? If you ask who determines in what way? It is like this, "They are universal goers," which means that even if the venerable Shariputra and Maudgalyayana were treated disrespectfully by non-Buddhists, they would not be angry and abandon them. Because they universally go to all places for the sake of benefit, they are universal goers, not considering this as benefit and harm. Even so, why? Because it shows "the great man," whose thoughts and actions are perfect. In order to show the sign of determining the great man, it is said, desire.
