Homage! Happiness is also of two kinds. Here, it refers to the happiness arising from the unconditioned. Hearing the Dharma is also of two kinds: hearing through ear consciousness, and not dwelling in sin. Here, it refers to the latter. Non-harming is also of two kinds: the nature of discipline, and the nature of meditation. Here too, it refers to the latter. Bliss is also of two kinds: through the distinction of body and mind. Here, it refers to the mind. The world is also of two kinds: through the distinction of sentient beings and containers. Here, it refers to sentient beings. Living beings are of three kinds: past, future, and present. Here, it refers to the present. Correct discipline is of two kinds: well guarding body and speech, and completely guarding afflictions. Here, it refers to the latter. "Happiness is detachment from desire in the world" means renouncing attachment to the objects of any desire realm, because it is the cause associated with various kinds of happiness. "Transcending all desires" means that being free from attachment from the afflictions of the desire realm is also related to happiness. "Subduing the conceit of 'I am'" means subduing or abandoning the conceit of 'I am' that follows the view of the aggregates. This shows detachment from desire from the two upper realms, because it indicates that a special conceit of 'I am' exists there, which can be inferred. "They are supremely happy" means that subduing this conceit of 'I am' is the chief of happiness. Alternatively, detachment from desire is also of two kinds: the principal of non-complete grasping and the principal of things. Here, it refers to the latter. Transcending desire is also of two kinds: birth and abandoning afflictions. Here too, it refers to the latter. The conceit of 'I am' shows that all afflictions have been abandoned, which is the bliss of liberation. Because it shows that abandoning the conceit of 'I am' will lead to obtaining discipline and so on, it is said, "In old age," and so on. What is happiness in old age? Where is it good to abide? What words are blissful?

The wise one. What brings happiness to people? Thus, because the gods asked, this was said: Happiness is having morality in old age. That is, from childhood to old age, having morality is the cause of happiness, because it is satisfying. Happiness is dwelling firmly in faith. That is, because it dwells firmly, it is like a wish-fulfilling jewel. Happiness is delighting in meaningful words. That is, it has a special meaning, and it generates all kinds of joy, so it is delightful to delight in things related to special meanings. Happiness is not doing sinful deeds. That is, not doing evil deeds. Whoever bestows ownership by the power of morality, etc., and to show that one has obtained its distinction. In the world, it is said and so on. Whoever holds the other shore, and likewise holds the mother as happiness. Whoever holds the knowledge of the Shramana and the Brahmin as happiness. As the gods asked, this was said: Happiness is holding the other shore, which means that knowing the other shore is holding the other shore, because it is the thing itself, so holding the other shore, following the father is the cause of very deep merit, and it is happiness because it is truly praised. Where is happiness? It is said: In the world, especially in the human world.

Etc. What will happen if the Buddha appears? What changes will the teachings bring? What will a harmonious Sangha bring? What happiness will harmonious people attain? After this request, the Buddha spoke these words. Some say that these words began from the conversations of many monks. The appearance of the Buddha in the world is happiness, because it is the cause of happiness in this world and beyond. Similarly, the teachings are also happiness, referring to the complete exposition of the twelve parts of scripture. A harmonious Sangha means that virtuous groups are mutually compliant, entering the noble path in a way that is compliant with the holy Dharma. The asceticism of harmonious people is happiness, referring to the discipline, meditation, and compliance accepted by harmonious people, just as afflictions and karma torment them, this is asceticism, and it is great happiness. To illustrate what kind of ascetic one is, the words "having discipline" etc. are mentioned. Seeing what will one know is happiness? Seeing what will one attain happiness? Seeing what will one obtain special happiness? Please enlighten me. After this request, the Buddha spoke these words. If one possesses complete discipline, then one is learned, this is what the Buddha taught, so "learned" is mentioned. To illustrate the fruits of learning and discipline, "Arhats" are mentioned, meaning those who have destroyed the causes of suffering. It is said that practitioners such as Rishipa and Barnamana, who are astrologers, are also called Arhats in the world. To distinguish them, the Buddha taught the special qualities of Arhats, that is, "liberated from rebirth." Having discipline and other behaviors means purifying inner and outer defilements. The method of purifying external defilements is rivers. The method of purifying internal defilements is relying on holy beings, etc. Therefore, the Buddha taught, "Entering the river of happiness is happiness." Etc. What kind of river should one know is happiness? What kind of person is considered happiness? Focusing on what will one become happy? What
