And he does not rejoice in not doing. How can that which is unchangeable become a place of reproach? Therefore, to show that it is impossible, it is said "of whom," meaning the distinction of sentient beings. The root is the seed, meaning the consciousness together with the near attainment. "Not on the ground" refers to the field, not in the four abodes of consciousness. "Without leaves" refers to the pride of "I am." If the monks destroy the leaves, it means that here they abandon and know the pride of "I am," as shown in the sutra. Just as leaves appear as dense trees, so too does the pride of "I am" make a person appear that way. Where are the shoots? It means that for that which has no root, there is no trunk either, so how can there be leaves and shoots? The shoots refer to craving, as it is said, "In a house with five pillars, shoots grow through, and for those who have grown shoots of craving, cut them off with ultimate wisdom." That is why it is said. "That" refers to such a sentient being. Teaching refers to the pure near attainment through the practice of the noble path. "Liberation from bondage" means that by this it is bondage, so it is bondage, which is affliction or afflicted objects associated with outflows. Abandoning afflictions means that what was taught before, by this it is shown that the remainder is abandoned, meaning the abandonment of samsara. No one should reproach him, for he is without fault. To show that the great nature of realization like this is not realized by the minds of others, it is said, "For whom," and so on. The venerable Godhika did it seven times, and with his mind liberated by time, he was completely exhausted and pleased the teacher, so he said these words to him. Proliferation is the cause of utter destruction, referring to the five objects of desire, because he abandoned desire and went forth. That refers to showing that he abandoned the desire for objects, and therefore, by this he shows that he abandoned the desire for afflictions, so he said "abiding," meaning that by this he abides, that is why he said it. He abandoned the afflictions that act in desire.
