If one asks, how does one reach the other shore? It is called "the well-spoken Dharma," which means the Noble Path that the Blessed One has taught without inversion. The benefit of this is immediate, because by its power, one will surely be liberated from samsara. So, what is the truth here? It is indicated by "going to the other shore." "Following the Dharma" means the practice that accords with the Dharma that has been taught. Through cultivating the Path of Accumulation, one attains the Path of Seeing, and those ways of subsequently cultivating, realizing, and conforming to it, are that very thing. Therefore, with good intentions, rely on a virtuous friend, listen to the true Dharma, and apply correct mindfulness. Through the gradual cultivation of impurity and so forth, those beings who directly realize the Noble Path are those who go to the other shore, which is to say, they realize it through nirvana. From what is one liberated? It is mentioned, "the great ocean of birth and death, difficult to cross." The word "overpowering" is the remainder of the sentence. Or, by what does one reach the other shore? It means, through that great ocean of birth and death that is difficult to cross. So, where is this great ocean of birth and death surely experienced? It means, in birth. Because one has not transcended death, it is very difficult to cross from birth, therefore it is said to be difficult to cross, because it can only be abandoned through the Noble Path, therefore it is said to be difficult to transcend. The benefit of reaching the other shore is shown, called "transcending time," referring to Anathapindika who was seized by a severe plague. He was freed from the fever by seeing the face of the Blessed One, and then asked the Blessed One, "Venerable one, by what will all suffering be eliminated?" Therefore, the Blessed One spoke these words. "Transcending time" means abandoning appropriation, which is abandoning birth. "Free from sorrow" means free from suffering, because having abandoned birth, there is surely no suffering. This shows the order of transcending time, called "completely liberated," which is to be liberated from the afflictions of attachment to objects such as form, and from acting in desire. "Protection" means being free from attachment to form, that is,

Because of attachment to the place of "E," one cannot abide, so one completely protects one's own happiness. The name "Tayi" refers to the continuation of wandering and protection, which is shown from the nature of language. "Having abandoned all knots" means being free from desire from the formless realm. In this way, from being free from all suffering, there will be no complete torment. Or, that which transcends time in that way is that very thing. Being free from sorrow is because there is no unpleasantness. Being completely liberated is because one is free from various kinds of bonds of afflictions. The protector is because he teaches truthfully and without inversion. "Having abandoned all knots" refers to not expecting returns, etc. Having completely abandoned all torments, and possessing the completion of all actions, it will be shown that the action has been completely accomplished in this way. Therefore, "accompanied by fear," etc., is mentioned. In a certain part of the forest, a diligent monk dwells, and when he attains the fruit of Arhat and individually experiences the bliss of liberation, he speaks this verse. "Transcending" means approaching transcendence, which means complete abandonment. The path accompanied by fear is the path of harmful and undesirable consequences of misconduct. "Completely abandoning the precipice" is because one has abandoned its result, the evil destinies. This half verse shows the abandonment of the cause and effect of going to evil destinies. Now, in order to show that by abandoning the cause of good destinies, one abandons its result, the word "liberation" is spoken, which is abandonment. "Combination and knot" refers to showing the types to be abandoned by the path of seeing and the path of cultivation. By showing the root cause of existence, "desire destroys all poisons," because it is the cause of aversion, the attachment that arises from it is regarded as similar to poison. Or, this shows the gradual abandonment of the afflictions of the three realms. In order to show the cause of abandoning afflictions, "like desire," etc., is mentioned. In the city of Aryavarta, the king...
