It is said that if they come to this Joyful Garden, they will drink water many times and this will be exhausted. Thinking this, he closed the gate and hid the bucket. The Blessed One, by means of miraculous power, went into that Joyful Garden. In a manner that did not depend on that well, he filled the Joyful Garden with water. That Brahmin developed great faith and requested the Blessed One to come here, saying, "Please take this bucket and water scoop and freely enjoy the water." The Blessed One consented and spoke this verse. That person also renounced and became an Arhat. What is the use of well water? This shows that the well is not necessary. Because water is needed for drinking, a well is needed, as well as lakes, ponds, etc. When is it needed? It is like this, there is water everywhere. It means that if one can easily find water without defilements everywhere, then even if one is thirsty, well water is not needed. What need is there to mention those who are free from thirst? What is being said is this: for example, there is water everywhere, no one prevents it, and it is easy to find, then well water is not even needed to quench thirst, what need is there to mention cutting off craving at the root? What is there to seek for what purpose? Because if there is thirst, one seeks water, if there is no thirst, then there is no need for it. The yogi who cultivates the path that transcends the world obtains the root of craving, ignorance or feeling, and having uprooted it in this world, abandoned it, completely cut it off and eliminated it, for someone like me, seeking water and so on for all things is in vain. You who have craving need wells and Joyful Gardens, etc., which is different from those who are free from craving. Engaging in conditioned existence involves all unnecessary actions, therefore, in order to avoid this, this was said. In order to show that by abandoning craving, one can cross the four rivers and cross the ocean of samsara, therefore, "whether coarse or subtle" etc. was mentioned. In the city of Patna, Barshakara

In the past, a minister of Magadha invited the Buddha, the Blessed One, along with his retinue, and offered food and gifts. The Blessed One, surrounded by the community of monks, returned through the south gate of the city. At that time, relying on the constructed dam, he crossed the evil lake, and from the near shore of the Ganges, he miraculously went to the far shore and remained there. Some monks crossed by relying on boats, rafts, and planks of sal tree, etc. Among them, two verses were spoken. The phrase "wanting to cross" refers to the person who was preparing to cross at that time. What is the "ocean"? It refers to the great river. The river that flows into the ocean refers to the Ganges. The "dam" refers to relying on bridges in the manner of water dams, etc. Abandoning the evil lake is crossing over, that is, the areas flooded by water, such as ponds and terraced fields. Then what is done? It is said, "also set up boats," that is, making boats on the water with gatherings of grass, branches, and leaves, etc., or relying on boats, etc. The "person" refers to the one who wants to cross the Ganges. He completely took boats, etc. The phrase "some people are crossing" refers to approaching the crossing, that is, reaching the other shore of the river. Who are those? They are the "wise people," that is, those who are intelligent and understanding. In order not to linger, they cross over first, to show that the guide of the wise people is the Blessed One. It is said, "Having crossed over, he became the Buddha, the Blessed One." This shows the gradual abandonment and perfect wisdom, because he abandoned the defilements along with their habitual tendencies, and because he became enlightened in all ways from all dharmas, and this is also the first crossing of all. The "Brahmin" refers to the one who constantly places his mind on external objects, but ultimately refers to the supreme Sage. The phrase "abiding on land" refers to abiding on the bank of the Ganges. Regarding this, "the monks are bathing," refers to the monks washing their bodies with clean water on the other shore.
