The sutra says that the mind here follows and upholds Samadhi, thus distinguishing it as following and protecting Samadhi. If asked how these two should be practiced, the sutra says "diligent," meaning to initiate diligence and not feel weary in accumulating merits. The so-called "abiding" refers to constantly guarding oneself from the faults of discipline, which is the meaning of "vigilance." Because the mind is protected from defilements through the combination of constant practice and respectful practice, these fruits are proclaimed. The so-called "bhikshu" refers to the complete cessation of afflictions, therefore the sutra says that this is the realm of Nirvana with remainder. "Will attain the cessation of suffering" refers to accomplishing the realm of Nirvana without remainder, because at that time all suffering will reach its ultimate end. In order to explain the benefits of upholding precepts, etc., it is proclaimed, "Therefore, one should always uphold precepts." The so-called "always" means that this discipline is not false, not incomplete, and not interrupted, but rather protects the precepts. "Following and protecting Samadhi" refers to completely guarding concentration, because one is diligent in practicing Samadhi. "And study insight" means to study and delve deeply for that purpose, therefore one should study wisdom. What is that? "One should individually remember mindfulness," the sutra says, because entering into the manifestation of true wisdom is the reason for mindfulness, therefore this explains guarding the senses, because the sutra says that from the causes of mindfulness and awareness, the senses will be guarded, therefore guarding the senses will enable the practice of Samadhi. If asked, what will happen to someone who is so fully equipped? The sutra says "There" etc. The so-called "detached mind" refers to a pure bhikshu. At that time, many relatives with prior and subsequent connections, when he completely entered Nirvana, the relatives asked the Blessed One: Where has the venerable one gone? Then this verse was spoken, the so-called "detached mind" refers to regarding karma as one's own.

Moreover, some people, through realizing egolessness and so on, have no pride and enter the path of seeing. The so-called "extinction without remainder" refers to the harm of ignorance, pride, and other afflictions, karma, and birth. Therefore, this speaks of the path of cultivation and also speaks of the path of no more learning. If asked, through what is extinction without remainder achieved? The answer is, through exhausting all bonds. That is, through what are the nine bonds exhausted? Or, through what are the habitual tendencies exhausted? It is that itself. The so-called "destruction of the body" refers to separation from the group of equal fate. The so-called "possessing wisdom" refers to attaining nirvana with remainder, which the ignorant do not have. The so-called "uncountable" refers to not being countable among beings. Why? Because the so-called nirvana refers to entering the state of no remainder. For example, the Buddha said to the monks: I will not say that his consciousness goes to the east, and so on. This is said in order to closely examine the sequence of desiring the bliss of nirvana. In order to show that the well-known cause of the earth's expansion is discipline, it is said "from discipline" and so on. There are three types of cultivation: discipline cultivation, meditation cultivation, and wisdom cultivation. What is said are two verses. Some householders believe in the sun, and when they see the sun rising and appearing bright, they ask the Blessed One: Who in this world is like the sun, burning brightly? Some say that this is the Buddha's answer to this. The so-called discipline refers to the Pratimoksha vows and so on. Meditation refers to the mind being one-pointed on virtue. Wisdom refers to truly knowing the reality of things. As it is said, cultivate these well. In order to indicate separately, "and" is said. Therefore, "these three" are said. Because the community of noble ones has the nature of these, it is said that the path of the three aggregates has completely included these.
