Here, it is said that a monk dwells possessing morality, guarding the doors of the senses, knowing moderation in food, and diligently engaging in the practice of not sleeping during the early and late parts of the night. These are two verses. "Morality" refers to the discipline of individual liberation. "Dwelling" means dwelling well in that place, in a way that is completely without loss, guarding it with superior intention. After explaining the discipline of morality with the example of the lotus-bearing monk, in order to show the guarding of the sense doors, it is said, "The senses are also guarded," meaning that the doors of the senses, such as the eyes, are guarded and concealed, that is, protected from all objects. If they are not guarded, then all virtues will be lost. As it is said: "The five senses of people, one sense becomes like a wild horse, like water flowing from the foot of a king, wisdom also leaks from it." So it is said. Here, all the words "and" are inclusive. The word "also" is craving, like showing selflessness, because happy migrations and so on are the cause of samsara. Or "also" and "and" are both particles, meaning inclusive. "Food" means eating and drinking, and so on. "Knowing moderation" means knowing the measure. If one eats too much, it will turn into diseases such as indigestion, and if one eats too little, the body will become weak and listless and without strength. Therefore, knowing how much is appropriate to consume, this is said to be the cause that closely reveals morality and guarding the sense doors. "Striving for non-sleep" means that by not sleeping, not sleeping means cultivating the accumulations of the path and so on, being diligent in that and engaging in shamatha and so on. As it is said: "Dwelling in morality, because of dwelling in the two dharmas," and so on, is extensively explained. Dwelling in that way means dwelling in the way of dwelling with the rituals previously described. That is dwelling in that way, meaning diligently practicing in that way. "Diligence" means initiating diligence. If one asks until when, it is said "day and night," that is, day and night are day and night.

Thus, this has explained the practice to be done constantly. In order to teach the practice to be revered, it is said, "One should not be lazy." What is laziness? It is laxity. To completely eliminate this laziness is "not being lazy." Like a cloudless sky, being ignorant of the aspect of laziness and withering away from diligence, what kind of sentient beings are bound by this? The answer is: they will completely decay. Those who have the nature of complete decay will also decay completely in the manner of decaying completely from merits, and therefore become unsuitable vessels. What need is there to mention those who have not completely decayed? "Nirvana" is liberation itself, not samsara. The so-called "that" is to engage in the practice of truly entering. The so-called "near" is being close. In order to teach the disciples to practice the things to be done, they will enter into the realm of nirvana without remainder, and in order to teach those who desire the bliss of nirvana the order of obtaining it, this is said. In order to teach that one should protect the precepts, etc., with the aim of seeking the exhaustion of all suffering, it is said, "A person abides in the precepts." Thus it was said, the son of the noble protector, from the time of his birth, was afflicted by various diseases, and therefore he asked the Bhagavan: Venerable One, how can a monk attain the cessation of suffering? For this purpose, the Blessed One spoke two verses. The so-called "abiding in the precepts" means completely abandoning the household, with the mind of seeking the supreme liberation, completely upholding and following the Pratimoksha vows, not out of fear of having no livelihood, because its fruit is samsara. The so-called "wise person" is the one who has wisdom, and this person has the share of abiding in completely pure precepts. What should be done after that? "Meditate on mind and wisdom," that is, one should train in samadhi and wisdom. As it is said, to make the accomplishment of the Sugata's words the essence, therefore accomplishment is also from the practice of the path, and with the vajra-like wisdom of samadhi, one slays the afflictions, as the sutras say.
