For the sake of the teachings, it is said that one should begin, and so on. King Utrayana of the great city of Roruka in the land of Sindhu, promised King Rupavat-hrdaya of the East to be an unseen friend, and sent him an invaluable jewel-like armor. King Rupavat-hrdaya could not find a gift to match it, and thought that he should offer everything to the Blessed One, so he went and requested it. For example, drawing a picture of the Buddha on cloth, and writing verses based on the ten paths of virtuous actions and dependent origination, etc., are given here as examples and introduced as topics. The meaning of 'should begin' is to act as the beginning of writing, therefore it should begin, that is, to begin taking refuge and truly upholding, etc. This teaching is like a great ocean, so it begins like entering the ocean. 'Should become' means to become fully ordained, therefore, if there are those who are lazy and obstructed and cannot completely abandon the state of being at home, if they think so, then they can be invested in it, because fully upholding ordination after taking refuge is a compliant act. Without that, there is no Pratimoksha vow. Or, it can also be done with the words 'even just taking refuge'. 'Should enter' means should strive, as it is said: Abiding in discipline and relying on discipline, two dharmas should be cultivated, namely, tranquility and insight. 'The army of the Lord of Death should be destroyed.' This is connected with the fruit of practicing the noble path. The army of the Lord of Death is the afflictions and near afflictions to be abandoned by seeing and cultivating in the three realms, because they follow the Lord of Death. Destroying it is to abandon it, that is, to cut off its attainment and remove it from the continuum.

It immediately destroys and grinds into powder. Likewise, you should eliminate the host of death from your lineage through the power of cultivating intimacy. The Bhagavan does not combine or show such a practice without fruit. Therefore, in order to show the distinction of clearing away afflictions by cultivating the path, he spoke of "whatever is called Dharma and Discipline," etc. Whatever, that is, to whomever, without depending on birth, etc., it occurs to all things. The sound called "ni" is to show the cause. "Here" refers to this Dharma taught by the Sugata. "Dharma and Discipline" is Dharma and Discipline because it is the discipline of the Dharma's rule, meaning the method of disciplining without fault. Or, it is disciplined by disciplining with Dharma, which is the Buddha's teaching. Here, it is not disciplining by striking with weapons and plundering wealth, etc. Or, the path has five branches: right view, thought, effort, mindfulness, and samadhi. Or, there are three disciplines: right speech, end of action, and livelihood. Therefore, Dharma and Discipline here refers to the Noble Path. "Acting with mindfulness" means acting away from all evil deeds such as negligence. This is how it is taught: Like this, whoever abandons all distractions and enters the cultivation of the unpolluted path abandons all the faults of samsara and cultivates the path of liberation, which is the essence of blameless bliss. "Completely abandoned" means completely discarded. "Cycle of birth" refers to being represented by birth, which is the nature of the three realms. Because there is no birth, it does not belong to the number existing in the three realms, so it is expressed by the word "Nirvana." "The end of suffering" means the meaning of Nirvana without leaving the aggregates from the three ends. "Will become" means obtaining and becoming its nature. The explanation of the fourth chapter of Mindfulness is completed. After that, establishing the chapter on suffering, even if one highly values mindfulness, one will still be attached to suffering.

In order to turn away from attachment, because if one becomes attached to suffering, then all excellent efforts to engage in virtue are abandoned. Therefore, (they) remember those who suffer, guard the paths of samsara, and truly show them. This can be exemplified by Kalinga and Shakya Putra, etc. Now, the explanation of the form of the collection is explained, that is, speaking of "from suffering" etc. In Shravasti, a young man named Delightful, with unparalleled beauty, took a girl named Delightful Woman, whose appearance matched his. About six months after their marriage, his wife passed away. Separated from her, he became mad, and naked, he searched throughout Shravasti for the relatives of the deceased. When the Blessed One saw that the time had come to tame him, he went with the Venerable Ananda following him. Then, as soon as he saw the Blessed One, he regained his senses, and seeing himself naked, he became very ashamed. The Venerable Ananda, knowing his thoughts, gave him an upper garment. He put on the garment, came before the Blessed One, and respectfully prostrated. The Supreme Sage spoke this auspicious verse: Whoever has not abandoned one dharma, this world is all bound. Such ignorance and fear, may you completely cut off from the root. After saying this, he handed the bowl to Ananda, and commanded: Go and fetch water from a household where no one has ever died. By the power of the Blessed One, he immediately went to eighteen kotis of households. But he did not find water, and returned with the bowl empty. The Blessed One taught these, and spoke these two verses. The others are based on the relatives who constantly mourn the death of their sons, wives, and daughters-in-law, which is the first verse. It is said that the laywoman Vishakha and the Licchavis of Vaishali were the cause of the second verse. Then the explanation of the first division, that is, speaking of "from suffering" etc. Here is a summary.
