In order to guide those with the capacity, it was not extensively explained; the examples are concise. Alternatively, it is for these examples to guide those who are to be tamed. Or, this example is a special case of the former. How is one controlled and destroyed by the Lord of Death? The term "eye decay" is mentioned, referring to the eye and senses that are decaying and ceasing. It means the deterioration of the senses such as the eyes. At the time of death, the senses such as the eyes gradually cease. The phrase "in the same way" means the same thing, that is, being destroyed. Alternatively, the word "same" is to show that one dies suddenly, and there, too, one is destroyed by falling into the lower realms. These were spoken to emphasize abandoning negligence, which is the cause of all harm. Because the result of negligence is the increase of defilements and the extreme distance from liberation, to show that, it is said, "Having abandoned whatever activities," and so on. In Rajagriha (王舍城), Devadatta (提婆达多) obtained the ten powers of神通 from Utpalavarna (莲花色), deceived through magical paths, and delighted the young Ajatashatru (阿阇世王) in various ways with magic. Then, with his army, he did many improper things, such as disrupting the sangha's harmony, throwing rocks to kill the Blessed One, and letting loose the mad elephant named Dhanapala (护财). He made him do as he pleased, and so these words were spoken. The summarized meaning here is also two kinds of deterioration: the truth of the origin of suffering increases, and the truth of cessation becomes distant. And it fully shows that cause—doing what should not be done. "Having abandoned whatever activities" means the work of practice, that is, practicing the four mindfulnesses, and so on. Or, it is mindfulness related to the body, as it is said: "One dharma should be cultivated, namely, mindfulness related to the body." "Abandoned" means relinquished, and therefore it must be determined. It is said, "Doing what should not be done," and it should be connected with the grounds for dispute, such as disrupting the sangha. Or, it is generating the four kinds of craving, as it is said: "Generating craving and attachment for robes."

Even for the sake of food, lodging, and the wealth of samsara. "Alas" refers to compassion; the victorious ones show compassion to those who later act in a discordant manner and are heedless. In order to reveal the faults of anyone who does so, "arrogance" is mentioned, which is haughtiness and pride and wrong conduct; anyone who does not rely on others and is greatly arrogant and acts perversely, all of those will rely on non-deeds, this reveals the cause of doing non-deeds. "Heedlessness" means not being diligent in doing things and not striving manifestly; this reveals the cause of not doing things, because the heedless will abandon doing things. "Of those" means that in such a continuum, defilements will increase; defilements are the arising of what has not arisen and the increasing and expanding of what has already arisen. Defilements are the afflictions and near-afflictions of the three realms. The fault of increasing defilements has been spoken. "Increased" means that the arising of such increasing defilements is such that the absence of defilements dwells far away, that is, nirvana becomes distant. Here, the word "distant" is a term for something extremely distant. If the cause of suffering, defilement, exists, then only suffering will abide near, and it will not be pacified. Reversing that, the white side is spoken of, "whoever" and so on are mentioned. Shariputra and Maudgalyayana reconciled the Sangha on the very day it was divided, and under their authority, they spoke these words. Here, the condensed meaning is to show the means of not losing mindfulness and awareness, and the remainder shows its benefits. "Whoever" refers to any great beings. "Well-composed" means practicing without inversion and with respect. "Always" means continuously. "Mindfulness related to the body" means that because it is an aspect of the body, it is related to the body, that is, focused on the body. Mindfulness is the collection of wisdom, because mindfulness enters mostly. By making that mindfulness abide near, this reveals the four mindfulnesses, therefore
