In short, it is to be freed from the defilements of indulgence. There are two kinds of defilements of indulgence: one is tasting flavors, and the other is not constantly practicing. Among them, the so-called "being mindful" refers to not tasting flavors. The so-called "constant attention" refers to constant practice. "Obtaining the exhaustion of outflows" refers to the benefit of being liberated from the three defilements. Alternatively, the first two lines of the verse refer to liberation from the dharma that is contrary to the exhaustion of outflows. The latter two lines refer to correctly practicing the dharma that can attain the exhaustion of outflows. "Not associating with carelessness" means recognizing the faults of carelessness and not following it, avoiding laziness by not practicing virtuous dharma. "Not delighting in desires, etc." refers to the mental happiness that is associated with desire, which is mental joy. "Etc." refers to closeness and familiarity. Here, too, the meaning is "not associating," that is, not following. It refers to being liberated from the corresponding state caused by indulging in desires. Through these two causes, even if one appears in the Buddha's teachings, one will remain far from the exhaustion of outflows. Because laziness and attachment to desires when practicing virtuous dharma are practicing the dharma that is contrary to obtaining liberation, one must avoid these two situations. How to avoid them? Just as it is mentioned here, "being mindful" means not associating with carelessness and initiating diligence. "Constant attention" refers to having the state of constant practice, continuously practicing in the manner of calm abiding and insight, eliminating unfavorable factors, meaning not associating with attachment to desires, etc. "Obtaining" means "arriving." "Exhaustion of outflows" refers to the exhaustion of defilements, which is the state of an Arhat. If one obtains this state, one can exhaust the three outflows. Therefore, this verse was spoken for those who desire liberation but are very lazy, and for those who are very attached to worldly pleasures, in order to guide them towards the antidote. For whom...

Therefore, through mindfulness, the exhaustion of defilements is attained, and for that reason it is said: Even if it is not attained, it is said, "exhaustion of defilements." The Blessed One, while wandering in the assemblies of hearers and monasteries, saw a lion with a mane falling from a cliff, whose two living eyes were plucked out by a doe, and for the sake of the negligent monks, he spoke these words. The summarized meaning here is that the first half of the verse shows the complete decay of the path. The latter half shows the fruit of that complete decay. At this time, one should not be negligent. The term "should not be negligent" refers to abandoning the eight unfavorable conditions of human life, which here means leisure. It is also not appropriate to abandon it through negligence and make it fruitless. If there is something to be, then it is said, "even if it is not attained," even if it is not realized. The term "exhaustion of defilements" refers to abandoning the afflictions of the three realms. For example, coming from a jewel island and not accumulating jewels is like not being very happy. Therefore, this (teaching) is to encourage the cultivation of mindfulness in order to attain the exhaustion of defilements. Why? Because negligence will be killed. It is said, "negligence will be killed," meaning that virtuous Dharma, like life, is killed by this (negligence), and therefore it decays, that is, it is killed by the Lord of Death and afflictions, etc. The term "following negligence" means going after it in order to kill. Here an example is given: "Like a doe to a lion." Just as a doe follows a lion in order to kill it. There is a kind of animal called a doe, which follows the lion, licks it with its tongue, and thus pleases it. When it is overwhelmed by a very deep sleep and falls asleep, it digs out its eyes. In this way, that lion also decays by following the sleep of negligence, let alone other deer? Similarly, similarly, those who abide in the root of virtue with strength, like lions, whether they are learners or non-learners, if they follow the demon of negligent afflictions, they will cause the vision of wisdom to decay, let alone cause the merits of ordinary people to decay?
