It means to adhere to a dharma that is incompatible with this. This indicates the wrong path. Children are ignorant, which indicates that they possess ignorance. The term "loss of thought" indicates that they possess wrong knowledge. Some say that carelessness arises from ignorance because they have not heard the Dharma. Some say that carelessness arises from wrong knowledge because they have heard the wrong Dharma, for example, Brahmins practice celibacy to desire a son, slaughter livestock and recite the Vedas to desire high status, speak frivolous words but think they are careful, naked ascetics practice extremely difficult austerities to desire liberation, and so on. The term "beings" refers to all beings who possess the nature of birth, which indicates the collection of sentient beings who have not yet matured. The phrase "the wise should be mindful" means that the wise should guard against the carelessness of the characteristics mentioned earlier. The word "and" indicates a distinction, because the wise are distinguished by relying on actions that are different from those of children. For example, children tend to indulge in carelessness, while this is mindfulness. Those who possess wisdom are intelligent, meaning they possess non-inverted knowledge. If someone asks, how is this mindfulness guarded? The answer is, like a merchant. Just as how and precious wealth are, this is also related to it. Property includes gold, silver, jewels, and so on. For example, just as a person who desires wealth accumulates precious jewels and so on, and completely guards them, so too does the wise person guard mindfulness, and will not completely degenerate from the power of their faith and so on. Therefore, these words were spoken to show those who are generally ignorant of the characteristics of children and the wise, and to induce those who are extremely attached to engage in mindfulness. Therefore, to induce them also to engage in it, it was said, "One should not associate with carelessness," and so on. The first verse is to avert the defilements of evil deeds. The second is to avert the defilements of desire.
