Because of this, it is not entirely an affliction. The scriptures state that sleep is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous. It is to apprehend what is indicated by ear consciousness. The word "and" is to fully grasp disbelief and so on, because those are also opposing factors to listening to the Dharma. As it is said: One can understand the true Dharma not with a mind of disbelief or lack of faith, nor with hatred or strife. Thus it is proclaimed. Others indicate that the remaining negations should be fully grasped. Because desire, aspiration, and so on are also obstacles, since listening to the Dharma is of utmost importance, it should be thoroughly abandoned. Having shown what should be abandoned, the text explains what should be adopted, stating "generating joy" and so on, meaning that contentment and peace of mind should be particularly added. If one becomes joyful, then listening will become good listening, like a great doctor administering medicine to a patient. The word "again" is to grasp the remaining limbs of listening to the Dharma, as it is said, one should listen to the Dharma in sixteen ways, as stated extensively in the sutras. Elsewhere it is also said: Seeking meaning, being harmless, being stable, being without distraction, not slandering, not despising with the power of words and speech, not being arrogant with knowledge, not losing memory, listening attentively with the desire to benefit oneself, being able to discern, being respectful, making offerings, is suitable for listening to the differentiation of the Dharma. Furthermore, two "again" words are spoken, because the difference must be established, so two are shown here, like this, having dispelled sleep and drowsiness, there are still cases where joy does not arise, because if the mind becomes sad, even without sleep and drowsiness, there is no joy. Even if the mind becomes joyful, it is not necessarily free from drowsiness and sleep, because joy in afflictions can also arise, so in any case, it should be stated according to one's own situation, just as if one says bring two things, bring flowers and fruits, bring two things, if one says bring one thing, one will not bring two things. What is joy? It is the mind, because it is the mind itself, so the mind should increase in its own meaning, therefore it is called mind.

It is the meaning of action. It is also said: For the Dharma to be listened to, and the cause of the three lower realms, after dispelling sleep and drowsiness, remember it well with your mind. Generate true joy in your heart, respect the Dharma speakers, understand the words well, and attain the state of utmost peace. Thus it is said. What is to be accomplished after doing these two? It is said: 'Listen' means to listen attentively, that is, to become the object of ear consciousness. Who said it? 'I' means that the noble Dharma protector himself personally declares it. 'Has been explained in detail' means to say it later, because the word 'detailed' indicates that it will be done later, just like a grandson, who is born after the son. Here, too, it means that after the Blessed One has taught, I will explain it again, which shows that it is what the Buddha said. What is it? It is said: It is 'specially spoken', meaning ultimate. Thus it is said: Special speech is the most excellent, meaning that words that make the mind happy are taught. Also, special speech is another name for language, as it is said: Special speech also means language also. The words special speech or special speeches, etc., are not contradictory, because both genders have dependent usages. Here, too, the differences of the verses are generally explained, so it is called special speeches, etc. Among the twelve parts of the Buddha's teachings, this is one part, as it is said: Monks, understand this Dharma. For example, the Sutra Pitaka refers to the Sutra Pitaka, which summarizes the essential meaning with simple words from the vast and consistent language of conventional and ultimate truth. For example, a person is born into the world. All conditioned phenomena are impermanent. All dharmas are without self. Nirvana is peace, which is exemplified in order. With sound
