Possessing diligent effort. Having mindfulness means having remembrance. Having pure conduct means having a pure and undefiled way of conduct. Acting after examination means having a way of examining, determining thought, and acting well, meaning to think. Properly guarding means permanently turning away from sins, and because of obtaining the vows of non-action, the noble person will always properly guard. Showing the method of purifying proper guarding. Living by the Dharma means that Dharma is reason, referring to having a state of living by it, that is, living by wisdom. Or, abandoning false and other improper ways of making a living. Those who are mindful means that because of being mindful, nothing will happen, here referring to being truly mindful and being an Arhat, because they constantly abide in six states. Manifestly increasing fame means that the good name spreads throughout the three realms. As stated in the Pajjataka Sutra: The gods of the Thirty-Three gathered in the Sudharma Hall of the heavenly realm and repeatedly dwelt in the manner of proclaiming the fame of the Bhikshu Arhat who had exhausted the outflows. Those who desire such excellent fame should diligently practice mindfulness. Because mindfulness is the basis of all qualities, in order to show what should be abandoned, the two verses beginning with "Do not rely on inferior Dharma" were spoken. The beginning here is that, regarding extremely faultless wrong views, any person with wrong views also views the actions of the body in this way, etc., these two verses were widely proclaimed. Others say that this was said in response to the behavior of a Bhikshu who was inferior and lazy. The first verse is to prevent the corruption of discipline and to lead into superior discipline. The second verse is to prevent distraction from the merits of desire and to lead into superior mind. The third is to prevent inverted
