is to completely protect the mind from all the laws of defilement and purification. Cultivating virtuous dharmas is taught as the dharma of mindfulness. Thus, this is a teaching on its characteristics: the dharma that is contrary to negligence, which is to supremely guard all actions of body, speech, and mind that are beneficial to oneself, is mindfulness. From whatever virtues, one will not become negligent, nor will it disappear, because it is the basis of all roots of virtue. As it is said, for example, monks, all the footprints of whatever animals that belong to the animal realm, all those are gathered within the footprint of the elephant, and are included within it, and belong to its category. The footprint of the elephant is said to be superior to them all, because it is the largest. Likewise, whatever and all those virtuous dharmas, mindfulness is the root of them all. Mindfulness is said to be the most supreme of them all. The so-called deathless place is where there is no death, which means nirvana. Because there is no harm such as bondage there. Its place is fourfold, because by abiding in mindfulness, one attains nirvana. Or, because it realizes deathlessness, it is a place, meaning the method of attaining nirvana. The so-called selflessness should be understood as the opposite of the characteristic of mindfulness. The so-called place of death, death itself is the basis, because by abiding in negligence, one will die again and again in samsara. Or, it is the method of obtaining death. Why is mindfulness the place of immortality, and selflessness the place of death? Here it is said: Thus, mindfulness does not die. It means that mindful ones, such as Shariputra and others, have entered the place of immortality and will never die. The negligent are like yellow fish and so on. Thus, at both the beginning and the end, and here also, because it is the dharma of death, it should be said to be constantly dying. It is said that the mindful do not die, so does the mindfulness of the father make the son not die? Does the mindfulness of the son also make the father not die?

Similarly, it should also be said to the lama and the disciples, and so on. If one asks, does being mindful also not die and not change? That is not so, however, it is said, "Mindfulness does not change to death," which means that by one's own mindfulness or lack of mindfulness, mindfulness does not die. Lack of mindfulness will lead to death. By the mindfulness or lack of mindfulness of others' continuums, neither immortality nor death will be attained by anyone. If it is said that it will be attained, then for the Buddha Bhagavan himself, because he possesses mindfulness, all sentient beings would not die. Therefore, this is said in order to lead the unmindful towards mindfulness, and to stabilize the mindful, and to refute those who falsely say that by the asceticism and austerities of evil paths and sacrifices, etc., one can attain the state of immortality. In order to show that the wise who fully understand the virtues of mindfulness will immediately enter into it, "its distinction" and so on are mentioned. The condensed meaning here is that one who fully understands this path and knows the distinction of mindfulness, the wise will prevent themselves from falling away from the state of being mindful. Mindfulness is also of two types: the perfection of wisdom and the perfection of abiding in diligence. Therefore, from entering so diligently, it is shown that lack of mindfulness is not without fault. It is only by delighting in the realm of the noble that one understands the difference between before and after. The "its" refers to the verses previously stated, which show the distinction of mindfulness, such as "Mindfulness is the abode of immortality," and so on. Knowing its distinction is the benefit here. Because it is the distinction itself, it is the distinction. "Knowing it" refers to symbolizing the wisdom arising from hearing, etc. If one asks, knowing whose distinction? The answer is, "Possessing mindfulness" is said, and here it can also be said that one knows the faults of lack of mindfulness, because one can symbolize two. Or, merely fully proclaiming the virtues can clearly combine, which is to show that the wise are not speaking of faults. "The wise" refers to the form of the previous gathering.
