So, aging, which is the transformation of the present state, and death, which is the cessation of the continuous stream of similar kinds. Desire is obscured as if covered by darkness, this is the classification. Among them, desire is the attachment of pervasive thought, which is explained by the phrase, "A man's desire is the attachment of desire." Darkness is because it does not understand the faults of desire, and does not understand what is dharma and what is not. As the Blessed One said, "Darkness causes blindness, and whoever is blinded is accompanied by attachment." Desire also, like a fishing net, completely obscures and fully covers the continuum of those who have attachment, by discriminating in many ways. In any realm of subsequent experience, attachment arises, and through many ways, attachment pervasively thinks. "Covered by the covering of craving," this phrase is used to explain craving aimed at the future, after explaining craving in the present and past. Craving is like a covering or obscuration in the continuum of sentient beings, like sunlight covered by clouds and so on. Being covered by it means being obscured, that is, the craving for desire itself, starting from the future time, shows its faults. Because, if one does not even want liberation in one's mind, what need is there to mention striving to obtain it? Carelessness is the place of carelessness. Therefore, for those continuums of desire that have transformed in this way, Bodhicitta should be protected, and the mind should be protected from evil conduct and the meditation that arises from it. Moreover, such a person is bound because they are controlled by afflictions and have no autonomy. Therefore, it is said, "Bound by bonds," because one is bound by this, it is a bond, meaning the prison of samsara. The bond of craving binds those who have desire. If asked what kind of bond it is, the answer is, "Like a fish caught in a net." Here it is said that a fish is a creature that moves in water, it is the fish itself. A net is a net, meaning a snare. Being caught in it means being caught in the mouth and inside of the net. Others refer to aquatic animals living in the water.

It is said to be like a fish caught in the mouth of a Kumbhira and other such creatures. Others say that it is made of bamboo, with a wide interior, separated by ropes and other things, with a tight opening, used to catch fish, and the binding material is nettle. Just as fish are caught in that way, beings controlled by afflictions are also bound in such a way that they will not be liberated from samsara. If they are bound there, will they temporarily obtain uninterrupted and special happiness? The answer is: 'Old age and death will follow.' This means that they will suffer the pain of old age and the pain of death. Old age and death are old age and death, distinguished by synonyms. To follow is to come and to obtain, wherever there is old age and death, these practitioners will follow. How is it? The answer is: 'Like a calf wanting to drink milk beside its mother.' Just as a calf drinks milk, craving milk, and always follows its mother, this shows that its liberation is far away. Because they have craving, they wander around in the prison of samsara and suffer, and in order to abandon it, these things are said. Here, experiencing the suffering of old age and death and abiding there is not to be experienced again, just like seeing the harm caused by poison, so in order to refute those who say it is not true, 'Purusha' and so on are said. After that, a Brahmin practiced celibacy for forty years in a quiet place, and because he had no son, he thought that he could not ascend to heaven without descendants, so he came to Shravasti (Śrāvastī) to marry a wife. There he begged for the necessary wealth, and King Prasenajit promised to give a hundred houses, and said not to beg from others again. That great king said that if he gave, he would also beg for a hundred, a thousand houses, and half a town's wealth, and he promised again. That great king also said that if he gave, he would continue to beg, and at that time, in the dense forest near Jetavana, a monkey, greedy for fruit, fell from one tree to another and died.
